I drew area 70 for a 2012 antelope hunt, being from Illinois I won't be able to do much scouting until 2 days before the season openner. Does anyone have any information on the number and qaulity of antelope in this HA? I'm not looking to kill a booner just something decent as this is my first trip out west. It does have some public land in the southern portion of the HA.

Thanks,

Its mostly private land save for the large walk in area east of Alcova. I hate to be the one to break it to you but we never saw one antelope last year on that walk in area, maybe it was just a bad year but we saw no other hunters out there either which told us something. We hunted it for two days, finally gave up and resorted to private land. My advice is to stick to the Northwest corner of the unit. That's where we got our goats and saw the most animals. I can't honestly understand why that unit was so sought after this year other than its proximity to Casper. I thought it was a terrible unit.....

Airborne1....Last year we bought a Unit 70 antelope tag for my wife, they were available as leftover tags. I hunted deer 100 miles south of there and I wanted an antelope tag nearby for my wife to hunt. After doing some research, I basically came to the conclusion that it wasn't going to be worth the time and money to hunt that antelope area. I hope you get more encouraging news then we are giving you!

There are some antelope in unit 70, I hunted it last year but it was a late season hunt and they were few and far between and very, very spooky. The walk in areas in the southern part of the unit weren't worth walking in to in my experience. Most of the BLM in the southern part of the unit is really rough country. If you are hunting public then I would stick to the BLM along CR 316 in the center of the unit or hike back in to the rough country off CR 319 just north of Ryan hill. If you can get access to the private land along the river that would be your best bet.

Hey Bigshot,
71 is a decent unit but public access is limited, if it rains you are pretty much shut down without the right equipment. The GPS chip is pretty much a requirement on this unit IMHO. I spent one full day and half of another one just orienting myself and marking my map on my hunt in 71. Don't be too quick on the trigger in 71. Private land access would be good in this unit too.

I've got access to some private land already based on the difficult access noted for this area. I plan on scouting for 2 days before the season so I'll be looking at some BLM land as well. Looking forward to hunting somewhere other than the Land of Lincoln!!
