A buddy and I drew this tag this year. We have been looking at maps and Google earth already starting our research and have a scouting trip planned in late August. We thought we would draw elk this year and missed out, so we went for this as a back-up plan. It's our first time in the Unit so any help would be appreciated, PM box is cleaned out too.

We bought a Seek Outside 8 man tipi with the stove this summer. We are planning on camping to save on money, fuel, and sleep. The buddy I always hunt with and I are splitting the cost and putting together a camp we can transport by UTV so we don't have a truck and trailer in as deep if the weather gets bad for some of our hunts. It's easier to get a UTV and camp out than a truck, trailer, and camp when the roads get bad.

Anyway I'd appreciate any help anyone wants to offer on places to start scouting or good spots to camp. We aren't expecting anything spectacular on this tag but we wanted to get out and get a hunt in this year. Any mature buck would be great and if that doesn't work out we will likely put a doe in the freezer late rather than take out a young buck. We kinda beat the odds last year on our hunt and are trying to stay realistic. We'll hunt hard to try and turn up some big boys but if it doesn't work out we will be content knowing we gave it our best effort and likely learn something in the process.

Thanks everyone.

Don't think you'll be "filling the freezer" with a doe, unless its a whitetail and you have access to the private in those units where about 100% of the whitetails are found. Plus, a doe whitetail isn't much of a freezer filler...that's what cow elk are for.

80,83 1 Oct. 1 Oct. 14 250 Limited quota Antlered mule deer or any white-tailed deer

Its pretty easy access in there, blow-down is nightmarish in places.

Don't be afraid to look at the north end of 80 along the rivers there, away from the forest.
Saratoga had a free hot spring pool that feels great after a hard days pack out.
Buzz is right about the bow down, bring a chain saw.

Thanks, my mistake, I hadn't looked at that since I applied and had forgot that restriction. I agree cow elk is a great way to fill the freezer.

Thanks everyone.

I hunted Region W last year and spent some time in the forest in 82. We packed the chainsaw then too but didn't end up needing it. We were glad to have it though, we saw plenty of spots where someone had already cut the tree off the trail. I'll check that area out when scouting.

We will also be hunting in 80 for the rifle season and I will be following your post. We found a house rental and will most likely be hunting the second week when the traffic dies down. I have an empty PM box also and anyone with info is welcome to PM me on places to start or info about the area. Unfortunately we are in Maryland and will not be able to scout prior to the season. We aren't looking to kill someone's trophy buck however we would like to see the country side and see some animals while we are there. mcseal2 perhaps we will see you out there.

I think due to a ranch rodeo I have to help put on and compete in at home I'll be hunting the first week. It's on the first Saturday of October. Dad was one of the ranchers that started the roping club that does the ranch rodeo and I've been in every one since they started it in 89. I was only 9 then and not a great help to his team but he wanted me to be in the first. It's one of those family traditions I will plan my hunt around. If not for that I'd probably be coming out later also. The biologist said especially if some snow hits the hunting can improve toward the end of season. Early October is not the ideal time to find a big muley moving in daylight so you might be smart to come later.

We are pronghorn hunting another unit the first week and if successful we will head over early. The snow would be cool but from the looks of it, we should seriously consider some tire chains with the roads that they have out there. The biologists out there are really nice and informative. Good luck.
