Wyoming 2014

Hey everyone, I'm trying to plan my first Wyoming muley hunt, I got 4 points going into 2014. Want togo into g but thinking I should try something a little easier first. I have looked at Eastman's hunting journal a lot there's just so many options should i hold out for a limited quota or pick second choice easy to draw area to get my feet wet and what the heck area to head for? Any info you will give is much appreciated. Thanks!

What kind of hunt are you looking for? Are you looking to hunt the high country? What about the low land sage and aspens?

Would love the high country but never done it before. So I was thinking low land would be awesome also. Just to get the feel for it before I get to carried away and go to extreme and have a bad experience, if you know what I mean. I have a cousin in wright but he not sure where to send me. I would hold out for a LE unit. With 4 points you should be able to draw or close to being able to draw some good units. Do you have any antelope points? You could always find an antelope hunt you can draw next year to get your feet wet and scout some deer areas that interest you while you are in WY.

Yes I do have one antelope point. Not sure where I could go to scout a limited quota area. I'll have to check it out. I hunted unit 27 last year for antelope, but not good deer country.

I would suggest trying a 2nd choice tag first. That way you can get your feet "wet" and figure your equipment issues out. Region F has left over tags and offers the high country type of hunt (watch out for grizzlys though). There are also a few lower elevation areas to hunt in F as well.

I have never hunted F but I have been in it. I would also not go in alone either and make sure you camp in your truck or a hard side camper.

Thanks AT Hiker! I was wondering how to do that do I apply for a impossible unit first choice and an F tag for second so I don't loose my points? And can I get a point also the same year?

Points only apply to your 1st choice. You can draw your 2nd choice and still get a point! Some of the general deer tags that used to be easy to draw 2nd choice are tough or impossible to draw 2nd choice now with the recent quota cuts.

***If the draw stays like it was this year, you should have no problem drawing F as a second choice and keeping your PPs.

Things to keep in mind for region F, most of the areas that are mountainous contain wilderness which a non resident cannot hunt without an outfitter or resident guide. Also the mountainous areas contains grizzly's and wolves. There is tons of public land in 121,122,124. A lot of the deer in the lower elevation reside on private property. It would definitely be a challenging hunt out in the blm land in 124, I have seen some decent bucks out by Burlington. I would send Huntwyodon a PM for advice, he has hunted region F a lot. I have spent quite a bit of time in 124 so I have some places in mind if you draw.

F had leftover tags last year so you should easily draw it 2nd choice. If you look at the stats for the random draw you can see what could be drawn 2nd choice last year. Also if you look up the units on mytopo.com you can get a good idea of the public land in each unit.

124 also has quite a few acres of WIHA private land areas you can hunt without having to obtain permission and the season is in November with the rut coming on fast.

F does have a lot of wilderness in the upper elevations, but F is also a huge area as well. Before I considered F I would seriously consider the grizzly issue (wolfs too) but them grizz's are no joke.

Yellowstone is also nearby and a must stop, along with Bison burger at Irma in Cody.

Yea, the far western units within F (or the ones that fall in the National Forest area) are the main grizzly habitats. They do come down in to the lower BLM lands West of Cody (even some come in town). 2 years ago I was camping just NW of Cody, awoke the next morning and went for a short hike, short because I cut a fresh grizzly track...this was in late Sept and it was pretty warm out.

Im sure a grizz could make his way east towards the Big Horns, but I wouldn't worry about that...if you ran into one in the eastern units in F then you just have bad luck anyways. However, I do not know much about those units either except for the deer numbers are supposed to be low, but plenty of land to hunt on.

Thanks I'll have to do a little more research on the stuff south and north of Cody, don't think I want to tangle with the grizz!! Has anyone hunted around Cody in the past couple years? We're the deer numbers ok? I've also heard there not real good, but would have lots of land to roam anyway.

I hunted antelope unit 80 last year and seen some decent mulies to the north, but It was in the limited quota deer area. Also had a grizz track in our trail on our way back to the truck that wasn't there before. They are coming lower in that area a local told me.
