I am hunting the general 128 tag for deer this year and wanted to know if anyone has info on the area. Unfortunately I don't have much time to s out due to work. I am going to concentrate my efforts in and a rou d the Norton Point fire from 2011 near double cabin. Does anyone know if bucks have been utilizing this or was it scorched too badly to support healthy forage? Alzo, I know people take nice bucks in the late season. Can I expect to find a nice one 170plus up high? Where might I expect find a nice buck in the area? Where would you hunt? I have never hunted the area but am familiar with it because of fire. I work for the Wyoming hotshot crew out of greybull for the summers. Hence my lack of time to scout. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You and me both! A first post by a person that lives right in Wyoming and has absolutely no time to get in even a couple days of scouting during the entire year before the season starts is hard to believe. I'm sure members that read this thread will jump all over it to help him!

I wish I knew something about the area. I would help out a hot shot guy staying in my hometown in a heartbeat if I could. You certainly won't have a problem being out of shape, holy cow you guys are in good shape. I can understand you guys not having time, all over the place and working 24/7 in the wildest places in the country.
I have had some decent luck hunting burns that are a maybe a little older than that, so maybe there is some good deer in there. Lots of fires again this year, it has been hazy clear over into Gillette. High grass from the wet spring and then it dries out isn't good sometimes. Well good luck.

You should be able to find a decent buck in the area you're headed to if you cover some country, but they'll be hard to find. That's the heart of grizz country in there, so be careful if hunting alone. Are you from Wyoming or just stationed in Greybull?

He couldn't buy a general deer license in Wyoming if he wasn't a resident or on active duty military service stationed in the state the way the law reads, so I assume he's a legal resident or doesn't know the Wyoming law!

He only stated that he was hunting the general season for 128 which is also covered by the region E tag. Those hotshot crews come from many different and get stationed in many different places across the West during a particular fire season so I stand by my question.

That may be, but as a NR we call our license to hunt all but LQ units a Region License (128 is in E as you mentioned), not a "General License" like he did that generally refers to a resident. I guess he can clarify his residency if he cares to. I will say that the job he has is one they couldn't pay me any amount of money to do, so kudos to him and all others doing that job!

I think what he meant is that he'll be hunting area 128 during the general season for the unit, 128 has a LQ season which occurs later in the year and is typically much better hunting and a very tough tag to draw. I think it is a wintering area and during the LQ season the deer start to migrate there. at least that's what I believe to be true about the unit, this info is based on memory and no research, and sometimes my memory is sketchy.

Pretty sure you are correct. It would take a non resident around 60-70 points to draw, but if you can I guess it is the sweetest spot in Wyoming. My cousin is a resident and had one of his buddies draw it once. Just like you said the deer were funneling right through the valley. He said there was every shape and size, just take your pick. He said he shot one that looks like tree stumps coming off his head! Tall and heavy. Sure would be cool to see all those big bucks coming through there!

I understood that he's not hunting the hard to draw LQ season as soon as I read his post. All I'm saying is that when a person refers to a general tag in Wyoming as he did, it would normally mean he is a resident, while the term "region" or "regional" refers to a NR tag. It really makes no difference as far as the hunt itself, as the season is the same for both the resident and NR. However, if he is just there in Wyoming for the fire season and bought a cheap resident tag he would be in violation of the one year residency requirement and could really get the book thrown at him. I hope the latter is not the case, but people get busted for many things they put out on the internet nowadays.

Yeah, I was just stating it would be one hell of a good tag, but, I would never draw it. And you would need more info to know for sure what he is talking about.

The late season is a great tag to have. As a matter of fact, my cousin drew it this year that lucky *&#$! My brother's in-laws run a ranch there too, and you should see the pile of muley sheds they've accumulated over the years. Quite impressive to say the least. Although, the top end bucks have been down over the last couple years or so there.

Let's stay on subject. No need to argue guys. Yes, I am a resident and hunting the general October 1st to 15th season. I know it is bear country and know the importance of a clean camp. I am hunting alone. I am in shape and willing to put in the miles. Just want to know if deer are feeding off the burn and where I should concentrate my efforts. I have a camp scouted off google earthe half wau up wiggins fork. It is within a mile of several nixe loking bowls at treeline. Any thought?

I haven't been into the specific area of the fire since it burned, but I think you're on the right track. If you don't already have a LQ elk tag, I'd suggest having a general elk tag in your pocket as well. If you're hunting the first of Oct. there, you can catch the tail end of the elk rut.
