Wy Leftover Tags Question

We drew for MD and Lope.

If i'm reading the leftover list right, The deer doe tags don't come in regions, just units. Is that right?

Secondly, there are a pile of leftover antelope buck tags in our unit. Can one hunter purchase two bucks tags?

We will be in what is unit 34 for elk. There are a bunch of cow elk tags available. I'm guessing that's because there aren't many elk In that area?

Yes, doe tags are by unit.

Yes, you can buy a second buck antelope tag. I believe you're talking about unit 20 that always has a ton of leftover buck and doe tags.

Elk unit 34 is full of elk, but the majority stay on private land that supports feed, as compared to the BLM lands where it's a lot harder to find them, but not impossible. That's why there are a lot of cow tags left.

So cow elk will be a matter of finding a landowner who wants em dead?

That seems like a good plan to me. I agree with Topgun, too. There are tons of leftover whitetail doe tags there, too if that was any interest.

Unit 21 for antelope isn't in elk unit 34. It's south of the highway dividing 20 and 21. Antelope 20 is the exact same area as elk unit 34. If you want the best chance at a cow elk, I would say you are correct in your thinking and I would say you'll pay a decent amount of money for access to shoot one. The ranchers aren't happy with the damage the elk do to fences and crops, but they also want money to shoot them where it's not that hard to find ranchers that will let you on free for doe antelope, especially after the first week of the season is over. Ranchers are pretty particular with their deer and elk, but most seem to dislike whitetail deer and antelope.

They can get the trespass fee and stuff for mule deer and elk, but I think its harder to get the fee for whitetails that people can get at home and antelope that you see along the road. Elk are really hard on fences and eat a lot like you said, but if they can get the fees, its a way to get back some of the cost of having them on the property.

I don't begrudge them for trying to make some money when they have animals eating their crops and doing fence damage, etc. It's when they start wanting the state to pay for that damage and yet won't allow people on even for a fee to put a stop to some of the problem causing animals where I have a problem. IMHO before a single dime is paid to a rancher they should have to allow a certain number of hunters on their property for free based on their acreage to at least shoot does and cow elk and lessen the problems they are having.

Im not from Wy so I don't have a legit opinion....but I never have a problem with a fella trying to make a buck if he's doin it honest.

It's pretty easy to see what I'm saying just by going into the G&F maps on their website for each animal and you'll see what I'm talking about. I believe deer units 30 and 33 are the units mentioned that have doe deer tags available close to where you'll be.

yes you're right. we put 20 as our third choice so I guess that's where I was getting the units I rattled off. LOL i'm from ohio, i'm not used to a Fsh and Game Dept. that actually has a helpful website

I couldn't have said it better TopGun. Also, when some ranchers leases the grass on BLM they feel they own it. If they collect damage claim money then all that should be required is the landowner coupon payment. I feel they get enough federal and state subsidies the way it is.
