WY Elk Aera 38 or 45?

I have 8 points to burn on a Type 9 hunt in WY for elk. Thinking hard about Area 38. For the self guided hunter is this Unit doable as a solo hunter? A friend recommended Area 45 but studying it on Google earth makes me think most those bulls will be up high in the wilderness and I'm a non-resident. Anyone have some thoughts about either unit? Or know a packer in the area 38 in case I get one down in a remote spot?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi tbone. If you search past threads, these two areas have been discussed at length and have also been compared against each other. Good luck in your research and welcome to the forum.

Look seriously at some other type 9 units. I know a great one and it's not 38 or 45. No grizz or wolves and first 2 weeks of Sept to yourself. Almost all NF too. Good bulls and some decent deer on general tag.

I haven't been a member for long so please bear with me. Your suggestion to search elk areas. Upon searching elk area 45 (as you suggested) the search just kicks it out and searches the key word "area" in which case you get pages of results. How do you go about it? Thanks

I struggle with the same thing, too much info. What I do is click the search button on an empty search field. It brings up a search filter. Then I've had good luck using the search for drop down set to titles only. I'd try something like Wyoming 38 45, may take a few combo's, but seems to work. Still probably gives many pages, but to me anyway, I can scan the titles and find useful info quicker. There may be more detailed filters one can apply, but I'm not aware of them.

Occasionally I'll have better luck using a search engine like Google, it usually brings up a number of hunting sites, including this one.

Thanks WY- Tex,

If you could be more specific in a PM I would definitely listen.

Never heard of anyone looking for non-typical elk racks. I thought that was reserved for deer...
Not sure anyone goes out looking for one absent a tip a nice NT one is there. NT elk seem less common than a NT deer, in my experience anyway, but they are out there for sure and recognized as such. I've only seen one up close in the field, 2013 in OR, was a big 5 on one side and a long 3' or so spike on the other side with one 10" ish brow point and about a 24" drop tine with a big bulb on the end. Had I had an elk tag, I could give you more precise measurements and a picture, but I was deer hunting.

We did see a medium 5 on one side with a 30" or so spike on the other side in 2014, about 90 miles from the first one. My youngest had a spike tag, I had a cow tag. In OR it was a legal spike. My son had misbehaved and had to stay home or he'd have poped it at about 75 yards. Not sure that one qualifies as NT as both sides were of normal configuration, albeit mismatched.
