Hi folks:

May be a bit early, but I'm already doing some planning for a 2017 deer hunt in Wyoming. I'm 31 and in pretty good shape, but I got to have my #1 hunting buddy with me, which is my Dad who will be 64 years old. We will both have 1 preference point for deer going into the 2017 draw.

I have gone through the draw odds, and we are not against paying a little extra for the 'Special' draw. I see that Region H, is a 58% chance with 1 Special Draw PP. But Ive also see that region can be pretty rough country and Im a bit worried about my dad.

He is active, and no stranger to hunting. But he is not going to climb 10k in elevation and backpack in, climb, pack out, etc. I don't want to put into a unit that we will be kicking ourselves because we cannot access or take advantage of the backcountry...

We will more than likely 'truck camp'- venturing back 1-2 miles off the roads and returning each night. Just looking for a fun hunt and a chance at a racked buck. Can anyone advise if Region H is too rough/steep? Slim chance we would get it, but Id rather not put in for it if its just too gnarly of country anyway.

We're also considering Regions A or D- but I have the same concerns...Thanks in advance. Hope everyone is having a great season.

I have hunted in H six times as a NR, and made two horse trips and several scouting trips. The guided hunts in the wilderness areas are out as a NR unless you hire an outfitter of have a resident guide, but there is a lot of area outside of the wilderness area that you can still hunt. Deer are where you find them, but my experience during the start of the deer season is that the areas near the roads are abuzz with trucks and ATVs, and anything near a trailhead is packed with horse trailers. We did find bucks and privacy only 2
and a half miles back, but it was a brutal pack in and even tougher to get the game out. On the more reasonable country on the first mile or so, we saw a number of does/fawns, but no bucks. I'm 64 and can still do it, so age isn't a limiting factor, but health and fitness is. I would suggest that you do a scouting trip if possible and see what you're getting into.

My nephew and I were elk hunting in a spot that is deer H, a couple years ago that wasn't bad to get to. We didn't have deer tags and my nephew found a big buck
