Hello Wyoming Hunters. I wanted to see if anyone has antelope hunting experience in Unit 113, south of Kaycee. I'm looking at that unit for potential applications and see that there isn't the largest concentration of public land but not too bad. I've only ever hunting out of Thermopolis, Shoshoni, and the Farson areas. Mostly western Wyoming. Not too familiar with eastern Wyoming. I'm looking to see how the winter was in that area, if there is good water good habitat, nice antelope country (versus hilly deer country), good access, d-able motels (Dad's camping days are over)??

I drew a doe tag for that area so I can learn a little about the area while I'm out there this fall. I try to draw a doe tag for different areas so when I'm done buck hunting I can scout while I'm out there

Thanks ManualMan, good strategy using a doe hunt to learn the lay of the land for buck hunting. Good luck and reply back with your success story if you can.

Good luck Troybackman, hopefully you're seeing lots of speed goats. If you can, reply back with a report on the herd health and overall scouting success.

Hopefully Dad and I can pull a leftover tag and make a hunt of it.

My first impression was kind of depressing. I basically drove the perimeter of the unit and only seen about a dozen or so goats. I never really stopped and did much glassing either so they could easily be up in the hills in pods. It is hilly too. More terrain than I expected from Google earth scouting. I think I seen most of them on the far east side of unit, which is almost all private or landlocked. I have no doubt you could find a good buck with a rifle though. I did also just drive through central Wyoming which was crawling with goats too. Maybe my expectations were set too high by the time I got there;-)

Well, logged onto the Wyoming site for leftover tags minutes after the opening this morning and Unit 113 was already sold out. It only had 7 tags leftover, so I guess it was a longshot. Might consider it for 2nd choice next year though, the public land access looks spotty but better than other options. With the County GIS web sites and a good GPS, you can thread the needle. Need a spot to hunt annually without playing the preference point game. We hunted out of Shoshoni in 2014, spent 4 PPs, had a great time and saw lots of goats and shot a nice 14 1/4 inch buck. Would like to keep it up and have somewhere to hunt while collecting PPs.

Hi Troybackman. I saw a good block of public land in the southern tip of the unit, near Edgerton (sp?). Looks like oil leases on BLM. There are some other blocks of BLM along the western boundary of the unit, but not sure these areas hold goats. Central WY is great speed goat hunting, if you pull a tag.

I tried buying a leftover tag the minute it opened and by the time I logged in they were gone. Must have sold in seconds. I'm in the exact boat as you with wanting a place to hunt while building points. I have 5 points I'm going to burn in unit 75 east of Shoshoni next yr. The biologist have been telling me next yr is going to be "the year" for a trophy.

I hunted it back in 2014 with a buddy. we were on a short time table as the hunt mainly revolved around my son getting his first antelope which he did opening day across the road in unit 21. having hunted antelope several times in several places, 113 was the most difficult to hunt that I have experienced. mainly due to the season already being open when we got there. no luck with ranch access either. the public stuff near kaycee was covered in people. much of the public on the south is in oilfield country. some is not very good antelope habitat. we found 11 antelope, 2 bucks, on land we could access on the south side. both bucks came home with us. nothing special. I will say though, I met a fellow from the Midwest on this forum or maybe hunttalks, that did well. they packed in several miles to the heart of the public in the south central part(need the map chip for sure) and had a great hunt. all of the lopes had retreated to the rough country I guess to get away from the pressure.

Hi BB- Thanks for the update. My take on this unit is that a chip in the GPS for Wyoming would be a necessity. Public land offerings are scattered and large blocks of public land are few and far between. My antelope hunting started at the tail end of the golden era when there were no (or at least very few) units that needed PPs to draw. Speed goat hunts were a respite from high pressure deer and elk hunting. The good ol' days. At this point, I'm looking for decent 2nd choice antelope units so I can build up PPs but still have the ability to hunt every year if I can. Unit 113 fits the profile, even though I hear not-so-good reports. Good luck with your 2016 season, hopefully you've got some good options lined up and you and son get into some animals.

Only seems to be 3 roads in 113. Does anyone have experience getting around in 113. Does Dugout Rd. go all the way through to meet Sussex Field Rd.? How about Light Plant Rd. in the South. How far does it go before you run into private? Can you drive into Jackrabbit reservoir? Any camping experience for the unit? I looked at the Johnson Co. GIS and couldn't tell much from it. I'll call the warden for the area but, wanted to see if someone here has first hand knowledge.

Roknhs,. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the only public land that can be accessed without permission with a vehicle is the blm on the south of unit. You can drive light plant road for 4 miles before it turns private. There is a good network of roads throughout it though. The other roads you mentioned you will not legally be able to drive. Pm me if you want my advice where to try.
