worth the wait?

Both WY Moose hunts we did were during the rut. It was a blast. Had a homemade cow call, if we saw a couple black spots in the brush, and could not see what they were, we'd call and the cow seemed to pop out first out to look, followed by the Bull. Not sure if that is typical or we had a magic call, or maybe it was an inadvertent lost calf call... Have been part of only 3 Moose hunts, so not very experienced with Moose, Ak and two in WY, the ole coffee can call worked when we used it. In 26 the year we hunted, it opened 10/1 as I recall, it was an opening day harvest and the rut was on. Go and have fun, and a little one is big! They are excellent eating, we especially love Moose roast.

Same opinion and experience here. I hunted unit 20 in 2011 and it's a fantastic unit for a wolf hunt. Moose?...........not so much. Don't even think about it. I'd also suggest unit 26 now, for the same reasons as Tim says. You are a sitting duck to have your points cheapened through unethical legislation. They will "change" to 50/50 split and you'll be screwed. That's what states do these days. Burn'em now.
This is what Zim was talking about;

http://forum.eastmans.com/showthread.php/9903-NR-Sheep-Goats-etc-to-10?highlight=Wyoming+draw+change

Although I haven't heard any current rumblings of this proposed change resurfacing you never know when it is going to rear it's ugly head again. Just look at what AZ just did to the current NR high point holders this year.

Another vote for 26. No wolves, no grizzlies, lots of moose, 40" bull potential, close to Kemmerer, and lots of public land to hunt. What's not to like?

Zim, What is the 50/50 split you say the WG&F will be changing to. I haven't heard anything about that and don't know what you are referring to when you say a 50/50. Right now I believe it's a 75/25 split between residents and nonresidents.

Sorry you had a bad hunt with a coveted Shiras tag. Hopefully you filled your tag. I helped a friend with his 20 tag in 2011. We saw lots of bulls but were unable to find a good one. He eventually got frustrated and ended up shooting a little guy. When I had the tag in 2010 I got lucky and saw two good bulls after only 5 days of hunting. That said, I don't recommend 20 to my family or friends anymore but I sure do love hunting those little black mountain moose.
Ya I was referring to the pref/bonus percentage. WY legislators have been kicking that around for years, and it's only a matter of time. If they must do such changes it sure would be nice to phase it in slowly over a period of time. But no we are always blind sided with no way to strategize. I dumped my moose points as soon as I could draw a mid tier unit for this reason. The R/NR quota will also take a hit some day when you least expect it. Point cheapening is the way to go in today's legislatures. Unethical attorneys/politicians love throwing the most invested sportsmen under the bus.

Well, we had a rough year in the draw, so we're going to take the opportunity to scout unit 26 so we'll have at least an idea where to start when we draw our moose tag some day. I was hoping that some of you with some unit 26 moose experience might have some areas we could check out?

There are literally moose everywhere in 26. Pick a drainage and go up it. We've hunted it along the Ham's Fork , Commissary Ridge, Pole Creek etc. Get out on a high ridge and glass the willow creek bottoms. We 've taken 2 bulls from 26 and one from 40.

Well, we had a great time on our scouting trip. We saw quite a few moose, but more importantly, we got to see the unit and pick some potential camping spots. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that gave me some pointers. wy-tex, really appreciate the location names, nothing like at least having a place on the map to head for! My nephew had a great time catching cutthroats and shooting grouse, and his first western trip was a complete success. He got to see nearly every possible animal WY has to offer! Even got a close-up of a grizzly just outside Yellowstone!

If your hesitation is because you want the better tag just wait. Another couple years is worth what you want then going early in another unit and then thinking back and regretting the decision.
