Wolves

So from the little research I've done this what I've found out...
I first have to buy a non-resident license for about $153...correct?
Then I can buy the wolf license (anywhere between 1-5) for about $30 each...correct?

Are there season dates? Or is it pretty much year round?

I'm wanting to go up there this winter (December, January, or February) to go hunt some wolves... Would that be possible? Or would I have to wait till next year?

Any info on where to go would be great too... Just looking at my options and seeing what I can do! Thanks guys

You are correct on the licens, tags and prices. seasons start about 9/1 and some units close around march and some are open till end of june. I think all are closed in july and aug. a few units have quotas but most dont. All the info is on the IDFG web site. They are mostly in the mountains. Frank Church wilderness, Lolo zones, ect and they have moved into the pan handle now too.

They will probably be easier to find in alot of places in winter but alot of places will be snowed in and access will be more difficult. I think alot of the wolves killed are by guys that run into them while they are deer or elk hunting.

Ok sweet. We'll hopefully we can get up there maybe during November and kill us a few... I'm sure the Idahoans won't mind if we get a few out of their way I wanna kill one with my bow but I think it would kill me first haha

Nothing wrong with killing 1 with your bow but I would carry a good revolver for backup!

Wolves have been in the Panhandle for years, it's far beyond "moved into" at this point, elk herd is down over 60% in the last 5 years and that's being conservative, the Panhandle is actually one of the zones where you can hunt wolves year round on private land.

My guess is we are a few years out from year round seasons and unlimited (or very high) tag quotas. IDFG is starting to realize that they are going to have to be pretty aggressive to keep #s where they want them.

Winter time is your best chance. I know quite a few guys who have had success finding large herds of wintering elk and watching them, if they are acting "weird" good chance they are trying to not become dinner that night. Several places in Eastern Idaho that are good for this (think border of Yellowstone) there are also several winter herds within a couple hours of Boise that guys are consistently killing wolves off of now.

Come up here and get one, we have plenty!

Looks like the first two weeks of December will give me a chance to wolf hunt. I plan to hunt around Yellowstone, really cant go sooner. This will be a first so any help will be appreciated. Maybe get in some snowmobiling also.

By moved into the pan handle I mean there alot more wolves in it the last few years. I hunted several places in it 3 or 4 years ago and only saw wolf tracks one time and saw lots of elk and moose. Since then I have herd of wolves being killed in places I hunted. Wish I could help xtreme but I dont know much about the area around yellowstone. I plan on getting out on my snowmibile and looking for them this winter too.

Lolo area should be good for wolves. Went hunting moose last weekend in Lolo area and spoke with NFS employee at a lookout tower where I was hunting. She said the wolves killed all of the moose at the lakes where I wanted to hunt. She never sees the moose anymore, just occasionally the wolves. Moved to another area 10 miles away, and the wolves were howling there too. I picked up a tag and hopefully will need to get 4 more.

I also seen a show on tv about a grizzly bear in Wyoming running from a pack of wolves that killed him

Just returned from eastern idaho.At mile post 79 west of mnt home around 75 cow elk, tightly packed,if your looking for a wolf,long range good, spot for stock.I am going back,more the merrier.Larry

if it was me I would wait until Jan. then you can hunt Jan., Feb., March then Sept., Oct., Nov., Dec., go on Idaho dept. fish and game then under big game you find wolves regions and the limite's for each.
