I've seen deer and elk move right back into a burn area while it is still smoldering.

Depending on the time of year of the burn I would hunt it the same year. It would be fantastic the year after the burn.

I killed my only non-typical bull in a burn, the year it burned. My buddy killed a 192" deer on the edge of a burn the same year. Honestly, it is very hard to tell. If you have time to scout that may be your answer.

Yep the same year on the edges of the burn if the burn has had a month or two to get some new shoots to come up. The next year for sure.

I have had good luck hunting burns the same year for deer haven't had any chances on elk in burns yet. But I do have my eyes in a couple areas that burnt this year. I will be spending some time scouting them this summer

From what I'm hearing sounds like the year of and the year after are the prime times to hunt burns. I was just interested in areas to look for when looking at maps of previous fire areas. Where I've hunted in central Idaho it just seems like it takes long time for the land to recover from a burn. I've never hunted a new burn before or a year old one though. Thanks to everyone that replied!

Trophy potential grows every year past the burn.
