Good afternoon all,

I hope you are all as excited as I am about the 2017 big game brochure being released! I'm hoping I get a first season bull for unit 49 this year!

As far as deer is concerned, my wife will be joining me for her first big game hunt. We are planning on a 4th season hunt and I'm looking for some advice. With her just finishing hunters ed. we will need an area that doesn't require points. She plans on a doe tag this year, with me going for a buck and I currently have 2 points. I have been looking at the following units and if anyone has any advice I would greatly appreciate it!

Units 7, 8, 19, 191: too many hunters? Too much private land?

Unit 18: Too many hunters?

Unit 39, 46: Too high for 4th? Too many hunters/hikers?

I plan on getting out to all of these units to scout but would like to narrow it down first so I can do focused scouting. We would like to stick closer to our home in Denver to maximize time in the field.

Thanks for the help!

PS - Anyone getting ready for turkey? I know I am!

Good luck to you and your wife. My wife also choose to start to hunt a few years ago and it is just a cool deal.

I am not too much help in the units you asked but think most places you could find a doe. Might want to look into 2nd choice draw units and cow elk tags as they are not too hard to come by in places.

I would get a cow elk tag. The first animal is always the toughest to kill cleanly. The huge target area works to a new hunter's favor and get a clean kill and good memories.

I agree with ScottR and a cow would be a great place to start. My wife started hunting big game with me a few years ago and we have had a ton of fun together.

I think we will go with a cow tag, what Scott said makes sense and it should be pretty easy to aquire a cow tag. Now my issue is the fact thjat I tore my achilles and will be working to be in good enough shape to hunt this year, I'm not going to be spending point in 49 just in case I have set backs, I can always go next year.
