Same in my area only a few miles west of 45 we haven't even been hearing cows chirping an they have seemed to disappear hardly finding any sign an have been to all my areas I usually hunt an not finding anything at all, were usually hearing a little bugling by now but lot of people I have talked to said bulls haven't really seemed to gather their harems yet

If you get meat from the store then dont criticize me for having the courage to go out and kill my own meat

Ive been hunting central Co for the past four days. Bugling is hit or miss, cows just don't seem to be ready. Watched a mature bull at timberline two nights ago all by himself, he was definitely big enough to have cows if he wanted to.

I think we are going to be coming closer to your way tomorrow. Going to start somewhere in Edwards and if that doesn't pan out then well head down to a spot in Eagle. Well see what happens.

Also going to be coming up to the same area for 1st rifle, I have an either sex tag and my brother has a cow tag. At this point in time it doesn't matter to me what I get as long as I get some meat in the freezer!!!

I've been seeing the something, some bugling but nothing really happening yet. I think the moon and weather are the issue as well. My prediction is the 18th or 19th they start going full bore.

We managed to get a couple of cows for the freezer. WE had some close calls with the bulls. One bull that we scouted well was attacked by hunters I never expected to see. I heard one say on the radio that he missed at 30 yds. When I got to my parking place it was like a city so we changed our hunting area to my house and walked in from there. Some bulls were better than I expected. I think two of our group will keep hunting.

Hey gypsum…. in the odd chance that we do get something tomorrow, any recommendation on a good processor in the Eagle area?
RBJ game processing is probably the best I know of have known the guy a long time and he's been doing it for years. I don't know what his number is but it's Ron Hagen is his name. And we hunted the eagle area all weekend there's camps everywhere and it's all super high traffic, everyone is road hunting and not wanting to get out an try for much good luck I'll be headed home tonight for a week of work then coming back for the last weekend of the season. We still have an either sex elk and 2 either sex deer tags to fill ( me an my brother) hopefully something gets them fired up a little bit

I hope so I'm working this week then monday or ing heading back to my area for the last week, we will be focusing more on deer this week since me an my brother have deer tags an I'm the only one with a elk tag but if we can get on some fired up elk we aren't gonna pass on that opportunity, the only elk sign astound when I was hunting was actually about 1/4 mile from my parents house go figure, which is also where me and my brother found some huge deer sheds this spring, hopefully we can close the deal on some bucks and an elk otherwise I'm gonna have to go find a doe so I can have some meat this winter

Well we did not end up getting what we wanted. But, we did see some bulls. We were just sitting in the timber and no longer then 5 minutes after we sat down a nice 4x4 or 5x5, couldn't tell from the trees in the way, came walking up and crossed our sights about 50 yards away. Good looking bull, but wasn't able to do anything about it because all I had was a cow tag.

So that got us fired up so we sit back down and wait some more. Just as we were about to head out I spot another one coming up. I am getting in to position and I see the antlers on him, just a stag but he was curious as to what we were. We were messing with him calling on the hoochie momma and he came within about 25-30 yards and starred right at us. We probably checked each other out for about 30 mins before he decided to take off. He was heading out the timber and then something must have spooked him because he came running back in and blasted down the mountain.

Although we didn't get the tag filled we had a good time finally seeing this mythical creature everyone here speaks of. Ill be back in a month to hopefully fill the 1st rifle tag!

The only bugles I heard were location bugles and they were provoked. They were in nasty terrain and you had to work for it to find them. I talked to several hunters and no one else is hearing them either. Talked to one guy that has hunted the same unit for 30 plus years and he had only seen three bulls and no cows. I covered an amazing amount of ground and found the critters but there wasnt anything like love going on. The bulls I found were not with cows and still using wallows. I did see a 6x on the side of the road in the Gilla with 5 cows but as for southwest Colorado elk 1 me 0-----

Colorado Typical Season

Spent all day in unit 45 and didn't hear a single bugle!! I sure thought by now they would be talking….? Anyone else running in to the same scenario?
Just came off another Colorado archery disappointment! Can anyone answer why we continue to support a state which starts its bow season in early September then throws a muzzleloader season right in the middle of it....Then when the elk finally recover the season ends just as the rut starts!!
There is a reason that Colorado has a 3-6% success rate...Could it be that the state of Colorado wants the elk totally undisturbed for the revenue that the rifle hunters bring in the first rifle season..
Bow hunters hunt for the experience....Meaning we understand success rates are low but we love to chase during the rut..
Unless your the primos crew hunting on land that is as close to high fence as you can get, that rut experience isn't happening in Colorado or its minimal at best.. Oh yes there is the occasional good hunt but overall the season closes well before the rut and leaves the elk as peaceful as possible for the high dollar out of state rifle hunters. There is no doubt the best rut hunt in Colorado is the $600 plus dollar a piece first rifle tags..
Why a s bow hunters cant we unite and boycott Colorado's unfavorable seasons for the common man bow hunter?

PS I have killed numerous elk in Colorado and am my personal best a 362 and 345..I have also killed numerous whitetails in the 160-200 class. Not bragging just letting you know I speak from a position of knowledge. I have hunted Colorado for 20 years now!

I would love to have the season dates that Colorado has. I feel your pain Utah ended their season on the 12th of September this year, Bulls were just starting to bugle the last few days of my hunt.
