Spotted this moose on 12/14/2014 on top the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming, It appears to have shed it's antlers. Is this normal for moose to shed this soon?

One of the only sheds I ever found was when I was getting my Christmas tree. It was laying on top of three feet of snow, so some must shed in December. Cool picture!

Used to do Christmas trips to Jackson Hole and a bunch of the younger bulls would have already shed by the time we got there. (12/16-20ish when we'd get there)

Moose loose their antlers starting in december, thats why they are so rare to find. They loose them and all the little critters get to eat them all winter long before people start looking. I have only found one shed whole, the rest have been bits and pieces.

Typically they will start in December. The earliest I have found a fresh one is around January 1st. It had just come off. If there is significant snow, which there typically is in moose ranges, they will usually yard up in an area with reasonable food. They leave lots of sign, so if you are in a moose yard, you'll know it. Lots of poop, rubs, etc. . . They will rub trees around shedding time. Moose sheds are some of the toughest to find, but they sure are a sweet reward. This is one I found one January. Photo of a photo, so not the best quality. . .

I found one in September on elk hunt from previous year. It stunk real bad so I left it under my SUV so it wouldn't stink up the vehicle. When I returned 3 days later someone had taken it. I was bummed because it was not chewed on and it was a nice one. If you stole one from a parking lot in Colorado Unit 28 and want to return it just p.m. me...lol.
