Going to try wyoming for elk in a few years. Just wondering where to start looking at. I will be building points for the trip and maybe try a cow hunt or 2. I want to get an elk. I'm 0-7 and really want to plan a trip the right way and not rush it. Thanks for any info

That's a pretty open question sigpros. If you are just building points, you can use the time to do some research in the MRS and state stats. The various limited areas can take a while to draw, and if you want the opportunity to hunt sooner rather than later, I would suggest that you look closely at a general elk tag. Try to convince some buds to buy points too, because you don't want to pack out an elk by yourself. It really screws up the odds when someone with no points wants to join the group.

I wouldn't set your sights for a specific area right now but rather just start buying points. The quality in areas can and does change over time so a fantastic area this year may not be your best option in future years when you have the points to draw it.

As RICMIC points out, the general tag is a good tag in Wyoming. It can be drawn with 1 or 2 points so you can hunt every other or every third year. I recommend cow hunting in between bull tag years in the same areas. The more time you spend learning an area and gaining elk knowledge, the better your chances will become to punch a tag.

Copy that. I was just looking at a general area to get started. I hunted 102 a couple years ago and never seen an elk. Had a crazy warm up right after we got there and had the elk in a pretty rough spot to try and get them. I'm 36 and out of shape my buddy is 45 and not much better. So we figured build points for 4-5 years get in shape and maybe try to do a couple cow hunts in an area to get used to it. Im a meat Hunter first and foremost so the cow thing isn't any less of a hunt. And after 6 diy otc trips to colorado with one missed shot. And the hunt 2 years ago in Wyoming when yes when I connect on an elk be it cow, calf,or spike I will have the biggest smile on my face because it will be a trophy to me and that's all that matters. In 5 years my son will be 13 so I'll bring him along too. Some of my best memories are elk hunting with my grandpa. He never got to fire a shot but he loved being in the mountains. Always said him and I were born way to late, missed our calling in the mountains. I'll keep pounding Google and see if I can come up with something. Thank you fellas

The best thing about elk hunting is where you got to go to hunt them.....
Enjoy the journey and I hope you go 1 for 8 next time out!

When you go for points put yourself in the draw also. Tags can and are given out in the non preference draw and although odds are very low someone draws them every year.

Kinda what I was fishing for also is: do I need 6 points 8 points for a good unit? I have to plan my trips out in advance. Money is tight for me. And thank you for your help

Depends on where you want to hunt entirely....You can draw a general tag with anything from 0-2 points...There are plenty of general areas in wyoming with great hunting possibilities. If you want to hunt one of the more special draw areas it will take more points. Each area is different. You need to do your research on where you think you want to hunt, then you can start to figure out how many years worth of points it might take...Your best bet for having 0 points, I would say is to find a general area. But if you want to plan many years down the road, then start building points. . Unfortunately, you are well behind the point game for the top units obviously, which is why i would say general would be a good option if you want to hunt sooner than later

I'd recommend also buying youth preference points for your son once he is old enough. I believe your child needs to be 11 before you can buy points. The youth points are much cheaper than adult, I think around $10 per elk point. Same for muley's and pronghorn. I think most parents enjoy helping their child take game than taking it themselves.

Buck bull I'm taking him youth deer hunting this year. I think im more pumped than he his. Don't get me wrong he his very excited but I am too. I found a place to take him it's really hard to find deer hunting ground here in missouri. That's the main reason I started hunting out west

Buy your points and then later decide where you want to hunt. There are a lot of good general areas and like stated only takes about two points to draw.

Are you going to bowhunt or rifle?

It would be rifle hunting. And I would really like to do a couple cow hunts before I go for a bull. Kinda trying to set up a trip that I really do right and stack the odds the best I can.

Apply where? Where is a good place for a couple out of shape guys from Missouri to be able to go and have a legitimate chance at killing a cow? I want nothing more than to do 2 or 3 cow hunts before I go for a bull.

Not many places to hunt elk out of shape that I've been. But u can easily get in shape by next elk season. What ppl are saying is decide if you want to Hunt a "general tag" or "LE". The general tag allows you to hunt a bunch of diff units kinda like OTC CO except u still have to draw it. Or the limited entry units can take anywhere from 3 points to u may never draw the most sought after units. Too many top point holders to compete against. It really depends on where, when and the type of hunt u r looking for will dictate where in WY u decide to hunt. For instance NW WY has lots of general areas with good quality elk hunting and easier tags but u will have to deal with extreme country and Grizzlies. Central wy has easier terrain and no Grizzlies but less public ground and tags are more sought after and harder to draw.
