I am going to be elk hunting around Cheyanne I believe in unit 6. I was wondering what to expect. I have never been elk hunting I have table mountain outfitters guiding me. I am just wondering how hard I need to train. Any help is greatly appreciated. And thank you in advance.

I take my 6 year old son and 4 year old daughter up in pole mountain hiking all the time they do fine, that's elk unit 6. That being said they might be use to the elevation. I'd do some working out to get your legs and lungs in shape.

Area 6 is mostly rolling juniper hills, a lot of rock formations. Very little mountains. Look up Vedauwoo on the web, and you will get a good idea. I would be prepared for a lot of glassing. Probably a lot of hiking, but not really anything steep. Good luck. I've seen a 380" bull killed up there a few years ago.

Thank you guys I have a state park near me in iowa lots of rocky terrain but at a lower elevation.

Sounds like a fun hunt. I have spent some time in the area growing up and more recently at Curt Gowdy State Park for a few visits. Table Mtn will take good care of you. Let us know how it works out.
Thanks everyone for the tips and advice. I am upping my training so that I can have great hunt. Fingers crossed I can show off a good bull but we will see.

For what it is worth I find my most important pieces of gear for these type of hunts are what is on my feet, followed closely by how I stay hydrated. Rifles and optics don't do much good if you can't get where you need to be. Train as hard as you can, it will pay benefits.
