what is the lure of owning a $300 rain jacket

I can wash my shirt in a creek and have it air dry in an hour on a cloudy day without it shirking to fit a 5 year old:D
I'm like 5'6.. Most 5 year olds are already bigger than me!

High priced, specialized clothing has its place, and I use quite a bit of it. But, it's hard to beat a pair of Carhartt bibs, for cold days in a treestand.

Merino is worth the money, but you don't have to go overboard on high priced stuff. But unless I can get it for dealer cost, you'll never see me wearing Sitka, under armour, kuiu, kryptek, or any other well-marketed, overpriced outerwear.
100% agreed.

To those of you that like to spend you hard earned money on that overpriced stuff have at it.

Guess it would really suck to make a little something to cover your stuff with made out of poison ivy. :D

I haven't had any issues with shrinking merino...

I bought one that was $60 call me cheap and it got bloody on a goat hunt. I washed in a creek and dried it by a fire. Went to put it on and the bottom came above my belly and the sleeves just below my elbows. It reminded me of the stuff I wore when I was a kid in the 70's

I think the biggest advantage is in breathability. If you've ever exerted yourself in the rain while wearing stuff that doesn't breathe well it gets pretty clammy and wet. We all know how badly cold and wet can turn out in the woods.

There's probably someone saying "what's the lure of wearing cheap stuff"

Different strokes for different folks. For me it's always been about the best I can afford at the time, whatever that might be.

with that in mind..... just because it costs more doesn't always make it better. sometimes you do get what you pay for, a lot of times, your spending way to much money. if a product has passed the 5 year test of time and is still selling strong, that makes it a good product that im willing to pay extra for. but back to the rain gear, it is deff worth getting something breathable.

I agree some of the brand name stuff is way over priced for the quality, but for me my best purchase was a Arcteryx jacket that served me well while deployed and in the field. Always dry and always windproof. It is gore-tex also, which you can't beat, but I do have to say I have had some of the other brands and they are junk for the price.

High dollar stuff that's lightweight comes in handy when ounces matter. Not so much so you have wear it going up a mountain, but when there's a limit on weight getting on a brush plane or puddle jumper.

Or any of the high dollar hunting clothes out there ?? I personally don't see the advantage ! I hunt in one of the most hostile regions of the world and do just fine with every day run of the mill clothing. The only place I will spend money is on my feet. Some of my hunting buddies buy that stuff and after it rains for 3 days straight their $300 jacket has failed and the $270 pants fail and I'm dry with HH imper tech spending $193 for both pant & jacket that has lasted 9 years now. I buy fleece from the second hand store for $5 a shirt, and Starter wick dry shirts for $15 at wal mart. In my humble opinion it will be a cold day in H@#) before I spend $90 for a next to skin merino wool shirt. I have purchased some of the so called higher dollar hunting clothes and rain gear only to be highly disappointed. But, being the cheap skate that I am, I only bought once it was on sale.

What are some of your thoughts ? I see this stuff on hunting shows all the time now and a lot of guys that come up here to hunt are wearing it also.
The only thing I spend a lot of money on is boots, as I believe its cheaper in the long run to buy a good quality set of boots. A ruined hunt due to equipment failure can also be expensive. Out of curiosity, why do you care what other guys spend on their hunting clothes?

This topic just shows how stir crazy we get waiting for hunting season to open. Here are my thoughts from a fellow cheapskate.
Merino is the only thing to wear in the backcountry. If you are not hunting for multiple days in the backcountry, but returning to a lodge or camp at night, big deal. Just plan on washing the smelly crap every night, and stay the hell away from me after about 10:00AM every day.

I love my Frogg Togg jacket, and it has served me well. Stepping up to a jacket that costs around $150 will get you a more breathable, more compact, a more adjustable hood, and hand pockets. I still take my Frogg Togg bottoms, and they do OK for me. If you step up to a $300++ jacket, you are paying for all of the same features as noted above but the best on the market. Somebody needs to buy these expensive jackets so these companies have funding for R&D.

I agree with a few other comments on footwear. I have gone through countless $100 and $150 boots. When I stepped up to boots in the $350-$400 range, it revolutionized my hunting and backcountry travel. Buy the most expensive boots you can afford.

I have slowly increased the quality(perception I realize) of my gear. I have decreased my overall pack weight and volume. I believe I am better prepared for the unexpected, which improves my safety in the backcountry. This is added value in my book.

I carried a cheap poncho for many many years and it worked just fine. It also would cover my pack. For the past 3 years I use the Cabelas space rain suit and it has been fine with no leaks the few times I have used it.
