My concerns are is it a big enough spotting scope for Western WY. I really like the size and weight but not sure if it is under power for what I will be using it for.

BB,

IMO you are correct. Just slightly underpowered for the wide open spaces of Wyoming. Quality scope though. If you haven't already, search the EF for MCSeals posts on his optics research and set ups. Provided me a great deal of insight and food for thought.

I've been in the highcountry scouting for myself the past 2 weekends. ..and my 16-48x 65mm razor scope is great. .but I definitely wouldn't want any less power. If I was willing to deal with the bulk, I would have the 85mm.

I have looked through the 50mm Razor a lot and have a few comments, hope I don't get sidetracked from your original question. First: 50mm scopes are limited but they can be useful. I have the Nikon ED 50 and it preforms well and I have taken it up the mountain and compared it side by side with my 65mm Razor. The Nikon is far superior, which says a lot considering the objective lens size. The only time the Nikon slips is the last little bit of light and then the 65mm Razor did better, but still not as clear. I think there is a big difference in quality between the 65mm Razor and the 50mm Razor. It seems the quality of glass should be equal since it is the same optic however I notice significant edge quality issues with the 50mm Razor that I don't see in the 65. I would not buy a 50mm scope that didn't have great clarity and think the Razor 50 wouldn't be good enough.

I have been real impressed with my ED50 for it's size and weight. After using the Swaro STM65 some more I am even more impressed with the little Nikon, it hangs in there far closer than I'd have ever guessed for it's size, weight, and price.

I haven't tried the Vortex 50mm so I can't rate it.
