What’s your perfect hunting battery.

Recently read an old article, “The Dirty Dozen”, It was basically a list of 12 rifles that you could hunt the world with. Some very specialized and other geared towards general purpose rifles. It got me thinking, I don’t think I need 12. I have gotten my list down to 6, to include 1 pistol and 1 shotgun.

#1. Everyone needs a 22 Long rifle For plinking and small game. Growing up in PA equaled lots of time in the woods chasing squirrels as a boy. Still love to get out there in the fall for some stress free hunting. My rifle is a Marlin 880, nothing special, even a cheap scope is worth more than the rifle, but accurate as all get out.
#2. 257 Roberts (The Bob), I have used in for everything from groundhogs to Whitetail, and a lot of stuff in between.
I used to lug around an old Ruger M77, with 26 inch barrel, great rifle but would make a better anchor. A few years ago, I ordered a Shaw Mark VII in this caliber. Since then it has been my go to rifle. I just can't seem to leave this one in the safe.
#3. 30 06, no surprises here. One of the calibers that should be in every gun safe. Mine is a Ruger #1, just because they look so cool. One of the most accurate guns I have shot, and easy to carry in the field.
#4. 375 H&H, I love this caliber. I didn't understand how general a caliber it really is until I started loading for it.
I have used it to tag out on a few whitetail and a nice bull elk. This will be my rifle, if and when I ever get my moose tag.
1 Shotgun, This might be cheating but I am including my Browning Citori Combo, comes with both 12 and 20 gauge barrels.
1 Pistol, For me it will have to be a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in 45 colt. I probably shoot my 44 special more, but if I had to limit it to just one the 45 with its ability to be loaded from pipsqueak to magnum is just more versatile.

A lot of general use calibers, but able to get just it done in just about any situation. I would love to include a 22 pistol as well, but I would be breaking my own rules.

What does your list of must haves look like?

If I were going to start a big game hunting arsenal from scratch, it would look like this:

1. A 243 using 90 grain Nosler Ballistic tips for varmits and possibly antelope
2. A 270 using a 130 grain Accubonds for antelope and deer
3. A 7MM Rem Mag using 160 grain Accubonds for deer and elk
4. A 30.06 using 165 grain Partitions because everyone should have one.
5. A 300 Win Mag using 180 grain Accubonds or Partitions for bull elk.

For birds I would use a 12 gauge because, you guessed it, everyone should have one.

If I were forced to pick just three of the big game rifles mentioned above it would be the 270, the 7MM Rem Mag and the 300 Win Mag.

.22 in a 10-22
22-250 in a Savage Model 12 BVSS
.223 in a Bushmaster AR
.260 in a Rem M7
7.62x39 in a SKS
.308 in a A-Bolt
12 gauge in a Beretta A300
9mm in a Glock 17

The guns I own that are my go to choices are
.22 LR single shot, Stevens Whippet
.223 Ruger Mini 14 Ranch Rifle
M70 Winchester 30.06 w/Leupold
M700 .300RUM w/Leupold
Sarsilmaz, 12 Gauge over/under
TC Encore pistol with 45 colt/.410, .223 and a .270 Win. 14" barrels
I actually love all my M70's the most (.338 Win., .325 WSM, 30.06 SP, .270 Win., .243 Win.), but find myself using the guns listed for everyday use most often. Kind of funny, because I wouldn't even own the 12 gauge or the .300 RUM, but I won them at Conservation organization banquets:). The shotgun is a no-namer basically, but it shoots really nice and the .300 RUM would have been in a M70 Winchester platform had I bought it.

Oops, forgot my old Knight MK85 MZ in .50 cal

.223 everyone needs at least 2, one in AR15 and one heavy barrel bolt gun for prairie dogs
22-250 or .243 for coyotes and antelope.
25-06 cuz the wife needs something to shoot
7mm the perfect rifle for the lower 48
30-06 everyone needs one
.375 just for fun
Shotguns in both 12 and 20 gauge. Cuz the wife likes to come along.
Pistols.... I think I'd rather just have a brick. I can throw them better.

.22lr have two, one is extremely old mossberg that has seen better days and the other is a lever action browning. Use both fairly often

.17hmr also have two, more of my go to varmint gun now. One has a turret scope and is a lot of fun when the gophers are out. Use all the time

25-06 sako A7 long range. This little rifle kicks butt and the one we have the most fun with. Has a vortex HST scope, would buy another one in a heartbeat

.308 have two also one is a browning x bolt and the other a Remington 700 that I will use as a build in the next few years. Both sit in the safe

.270 win. Browning lever action. Is a matched set with the .22 that I won at a elk foundation dinner. Never used it because I think it's too nice

.338 win mag. Savage bolt action, my main hunting gun, and the only gun I use not set up with a turret scope for long range. Use only during rifle season

.338 Lapua savage 110. Just bought this gun and not sure how I feel about it. Trying to figure loads out for it this winter hoping to shoot a 300gr bullet out of it. Is our main long range rifle with a Vortex PST scope, still a Work in progress, but plan on using all the time

12 gauge shot gun, one pump and one semi auto. Also have a 410 youth shotgun that sits in the safe

Can't forget about old trusty 45-70 single shot. It's like the little engine that could!!!

Down to one pistol, a S&W 40. I have a hard time justifying spending a lot of money on pistols to unload clips at pop cans

I really wish I owned one more small bore like a .223 since I don't have one at the moment, but I hate ARs. I really love heavy barreled bolt action rifles and want to build a 6.5 out of the Remington .308 someday. I'd also love to own a Beretta or Browning O/U because they are gorgeous, and I love shooting clays. I need more higher end scopes, so going to try and save up for one maybe two more vortex HST's. One for my .338 and another for the browning .308

If limited to the rifles I have:

CZ455 American, 22LR & .17HMR switch-barrel
Kimber Montana .223
Kimber Montana 7mm-08
Kimber Montana .338 Federal
I don't have a big rifle.....but have killed both a Grizzly and Brown bear with my Mathews bow!
Staying with the Kimber theme, i probably would get a Talkeetna .375 HH if I was a going after really large game.

This is a man that should change his handle to Lever Man! He has a great collection. He should be a Cowboy Action Shooter (like me) as he has a single action too.
Congratulations...............
