Hi everyone,

I’m new to firearms and looking to get proper training. I want to learn safe handling, maintenance, and improve accuracy. There are a lot of options out there like ranges, private instructors, and online courses, so I’m unsure where to start.

What kind of training would you recommend for a complete beginner? Should I focus on a particular type of firearm first (handgun, rifle, etc.)?

Also, how important is certification or licensing during the training process?

I’d really appreciate any advice from those with experience.

What kind of training would you recommend for a complete beginner? Would using a firearm training simulator be a good first step, or should I focus on a particular type of firearm first (handgun, rifle, etc.)?

Also, how important is certification or licensing during the training process?

You don't say what state you live in, but I would start with your state offered Hunter Safety course. That is just the basics and you can see what you want to further with. Go online to you state game & fish (or whatever it's called) and they can tell you when & where it is offered

Many states offer free firearm safety courses. Those are a great place to start imo. Basic firearm function can be looked up online for just about any kind of firearm after you have basics of safety down. Can't stress it enough, treat every firearm like it is loaded no matter what. Having extreme caution saves lives.

I agree with CC but it could also depend on how fast you want to see if you can get into a training or safety class.

In my area we have a certified firearms instructor who once a month starts a class on basic firearm safety and shooting, he caters more to women for self defense but he also has mixed classes.
