This is the year, as well as my first elk hunt. Im hunting the Weiser River unit. I have permission to hunt a few different properties in the Weiser River, but im more of a public land kinda guy. I like to enjoy it while we have it. I'll be hunting around the Council area more or less plan on spending most of my time on Cuddy and Council Mtn. Im not looking for any spots I don't need your spots i'll find my own. I was just wondering how the elk Population is doing around these area's. How's the quality of bull's? I am not trophy hunting I am shooting the first legal bull I see. Also I do live in CA and I don't want to hear the BS that comes with it. The Mules, goats, and elk in my back yard would blow the doors off a lot of places in Idaho. As I have the credentials to prove it.

tough winter and some winter kills but there be elk.

sounds like you have some sorta chip on your shoulder regarding being from californy. don't know why nor do I need to but when asking for info it would probably help you to lose it.

Yea for sure! Sounds like you've had bad experiences on other forums. This forum isn't like that. I'm sure you'll get more and better responses if you talk nice. Lot of good folks on here from CA and that last statement sure sounds pissy. Oh well congrats on your your "door blowing off Mules, goats and elk". Although our mules and goats down south may give you CA boys a run for your money, however our elk can not compete.

You better lose that pissy attitude before you show up to hunt. Native Idahoans will treat you with respect until they get a dose of that arrogance. You would be well adivsed to leave it in Caly. Your time here will go smoother if you practice the friendly and humble routine.

I grew up in Idaho, fishing the Snake. My family and friends still live there. Sorry bout the chip, I just know how people get treated when stereotyped. I live in the Northeast Corner of Cali and love it. The only problem is that it is part of California. Sorry I came off that way it. Anywho thanks the info, im really looking forward to getting up that way and doing a little scouting. I have some friends that live in Weiser and for me its only like a 6 hour drive. I cant wait till hunting season. I've already started scouting down my way.

Matt I was just bragging about our animals more than anything, its fun. A lot of people don't realize the kinda animals we have here. Im just a country boy, from a very small town. I apologize for coming off like a Dueche.

It's all good. Those are some great animals anywhere. I myself do not put northern CA into same category as the rest of the state. I thought when I was out there that it's as FINE a country as anywhere in the world.
Good luck with your research. The guys on this site are very very helpful and respectful. Stick around and you'll see what I'm talking about. Even 'Ol Sneakypete is a pretty good dude, and he's from Northern Ca. :D So we don't hold it against ya. If your a hunter and a good 'ol boy your welcome around this campfire anytime no matter where your from.

I live in the high desert, 40 miles form Oregon, 25 miles from Nevada. Things are a little different in our corner, The good ole boy system is still in effect. The only thing to do around here is hunt, fish, work. Wouldn't have it any other way (besides the California part)

I expect there to be a lot of hunters, I plan on being on foot and doing anywhere from 8-10 miles a day hopefully I can get away from most of them. I would love to hunt the Middle Fork Unit in the rut, but that cuts into our cali elk season, still so many options. Anybody ever hunted Sawtooth?

Good afternoon,
I just found this site while searching for information on the Weiser Zone. I have read that the population has gone high. The fish and game has an objective of about 25 cows and 500 bulls and is far exceeding that. I am wondering if I should be looking at area 22 or 31a. I am thinking about the Cuddy mountain area. Doesn't look as steep as the north of area 22.
Ill give you a little reason I am asking. I live in Nevada and cannot apply for another 6 years, so realistically, I probably will not be able to draw an archery tag for 10. I am 56 years old. If you do the math, you will see that I probably do not have many good years left. On top of that, I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma this summer. I am not saying this to get any sympathy. It is so you would understand why I am trying to find a place to hunt. This area has an either sex tag. I do not need to find a monster, although I would not pass it up. Just want to find a place where I can go, see the elk, and maybe get a shot. Hopefully a bull, but if the situation presents itself, then a cow would fill the freezer.
If anyone is interested in what I know about Nevada areas 231 or 61/71, I would be glad to share what I know.
Thanks in advance
Jerry

Weiser River Elk

Hey guys... New elk hunter here. I'm out of Virginia, and was attracted to ID's disabled vet tag, so decided to jump on it. The unit I was advised to go after wasn't available this year, and so the nearest geographic area next to that with a decent success rate from years prior looked like Weiser River (though I think I would've preferred something with a bit more topography/higher terrain?...hard to tell from my early stages of research). So, here's my question, and I know it's a bit of a dummy question, but like I said I'm a total noob to Western big game and how units work and the spread of the land... but it appears the public land is all pretty disjointed and aside from the few WMAs that it's mostly private land and few Access Yes spots (can someone explain those in lay terms?).

Anyway, big, dumb question is... how do I know where I can hunt in the area? I've got OnX layers, but it seems a bit difficult to sort through those layers. Are there big chunks of BLM land in the area I can reasonable expect not to bump another hunter in? Can I get far enough off the beaten path in that unit? I don't expect to get any grid coordinates or anything (though that'd be super generous and certainly appreciated), but a general guideline from someone who's familiar with the unit for how to approach this area, maybe some starting trailhead options I can then research?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Regards,
Rad

Got tricky to stay out of trouble with the new trespass law. But there is large chunks of federal and state land left. The biggest thing is all the old logging roads.. Access is good but I have found that you will run into other hunters as it seems like a lot want the same thing. I find that it's not unusual to walk miles in and find boot prints. Or another road! More of a problem IMO was the wolves. They are thick and have the elk on edge and quiet. With all this pressure, they have learned where the private land is and a lot move there.
