i took one on a backpacking adventure with me, was excited to try it out. I dropped the filter on accident from to high up and it broke right on a rock. never did get a chance to use it. seems like a fast easy way to grab a drink from a creek. I like my good ole fashion pump system, but same concept really. those straws are pretty cool and should be a must in everyone's packs for the just incase factor.

Bleach, light weight, very small. Pop the cap off a visine bottle and fill with bleach. If it's clear water 3 drops per liter, wait ten minutes. If it's murky or from a source that isn't flowing water 4 or 5 drops does the trick, good luck.

That looks like a similar concept to the lifestraw water bottles. I used one in a wilderness area here in Minnesota on a week like fishing trip. Half of us had lifestraw bottles and half had to use the pump. Let me tell you, nothing was nicer then dipping my bottle into the lake and getting a drink. It has been my favorite addition to my backpacking gear. The guys on our trip that didn't have one bought one as soon as we got back to civilization! The only negative to this kind of bottle is you need a deep enough water source to dip it in.

How many drops of bleach to 1Qt water?

I have actually heard that this is one of the safest methods to purify water.

I have a friend that did this in Mexico and everyone else got sick from the water but him......must work good.

Chlorine (bleach) is what municipal water systems use to purify their water. Just make sure you give it sufficient time to kill all the bad stuff. You increase the dosage as the water gets cruddier; 3 drops per liter up to 8 drops per liter. The biggest disadvantage is the taste, but you can cover that with lemonade, tea, etc. Just do not add anything to the water until after 15-20 min. so the bad stuff gets wiped out. That is what we were taught in Wilderness First Responders School.

i ordered that berkey water bottle and thought i might like it.Well after i fill it up it was tough getting the water out. It was like trying to suck a golf ball through a garden hose.

I have the aquamira bottle I think that's what it's called, anyway it has the filter right under the cover. It's the same way as yours, but with the filter solid under the cover you can squeeze it to which helps the water come out. I think for my next trip I'm going to try the sawyer mini.

That's funny right there! If I am in an area that has fresh moving water, and not just stagnant water around, I use aquamira drops. They weigh nothing and actually improve the taste of water if you ask me.

I just got my aquamira drops in the mail yesterday from Amazon. But also carry a pump filter that I can hook right inline with my bite mouth piece and able to fill bladder without taking it out of pack. It worked good in AK. Haven't used the drops yet but plan on it next week.

Steripens are light weight and easy to use. After lots of research I went with the streipen this year because of size, weight and they work.

Another vote for the steripen here. Although, I wouldnt want to use it in areas that I wasn't sure if there'd be clear water.. Using it to filter water out of a mud puddle might make me sad.
I carry a few backup water purifying tables as well, just in case.
