I know this is a hunting forum but I just have to vent somewhere.
It really pisses me off that some a**hole did this again at Comins Lake just outside of Ely NV. It was quite the trophy trout fisherie until somebody introduced northern pike into it about 15 years ago. They just decimated the trout. NDOW poisoned the lake at a cost of $400,000 to get rid of the pike for the second time in about 20 years. First in 1989 and again in 2015.
Now some jacka** has done the same thing again.
The lake was just starting to come back as a place to catch big trout and now it will be ruined again.

Around here it isn't Pike, it's smallmouth bass. Just had to poison Mira Monte a few years back to get rid of them. Taken awhile for the trophy trout fishery to come back.

I'm not familiar with this particular lake, but it's just as likely that some pike simply escaped the last poisoning attempt

The problem around here is that the smallmouth really outcompete the fry of almost every other gamefish. There are plenty of lakes here ( at least 30 within 50 miles of my place) that have warmwater fish and trout. There are only a few with trout only.

We have the same problem with illegal stocking here in Wyoming as well. Buffalo Bill reservoir is now home to illegally stocked walleye. There are Burbot all over the Flaming Gorge and the Green river. Non Native fish planted by greedy, selfish individuals with no regard for the natural environment. They want THEIR favorite species in lakes they fish, everyone else be damned.

How about issuing a "NO LIMIT" bag on the pike....and allow spearing/bowfishing them in the spring when they spawn? Pike are good eats...it's a shame to waste them.

Unfortunately the situation of illegal stocking of fish is an epidemic that is really undermining the best efforts, planning and research by Game & Fish Dept biologists. Here in Colorado it is now illegal to transport any live aquatic species from the habitat they came from. Live wells and bait buckets must be empty and all fish, crawdads and minnows must be dead. Bad deal all around, especially when I used to trap crawfish and restock my private pond with them as my bass and catfish eat them up like candy!

Nope. We went years with no pike in the lake. Then some selfish jacka** probably from a northern state where they like to fish for pike transported some fish from Bassett Lake about 20 miles away and ruined everything. They ate all the trout and bass and the lake ended up with a population of stunted pike because they turned cannibalistic when they ran out of other fish to eat.
Another lake that was pretty much ruined was Wildhorse Reservoir north of Elko NV when somebody introduced yellow perch and catfish. It was a trout lake where fish 20-25 inches were the norm. Now it is just another mediocre.

Hey tttoadman...what the hell has NASCAR got to do with this discussion? I've lived in the west all my 75 years and have been a NASCAR fan since I was 16. I like racing cars ...period. I like fishing too and oh yeah, I hunt also.

In several areas in Alaska, Pike may not be released back into the water, it's not legal. Gotta kill 'em! No limit. Illegal introductions up here too.

We had some sob release pike into lake Davis out of Quincy Ca two times, bo,th times the state had to poison the lake. It was a great trout fishery!

Perhaps the pike were introduced by waterfowl?
