Valley Timber Company Lands

Curious to hear how many people on here purchase the permits from the private timber companies for late season blacktail hunting? I know they only sell a set amount so maybe it would be worth it to be able to hunt some "Private" land. But it doesn't sound like you can camp on it and actually can't even be on it any earlier than 1 hour before sunrise or later than 1 hour after sunset. And they aren't exactly cheap...

I just finished Cam Hanes book on hunting blacktail and I have to assume he was talking about this same timber company land since it's pretty close to the Springfield area. Sounds like back when he wrote the book there were no permits required and also that you could head in way before dawn to reach an area.

Anyway, if anyone is willing to share their experiences/opinions that is greatly appreciated. Got my first elk (Archery - 4pt Bull) this year but missed on my Mulie. Terrible botched shot at 35 yds on a beauty 4x4! So now it's time to start focusing on the late season blacktail!

Congrats on the bull! I would rather spend the $500 on a fuel and motel in Shady Cove and hunt public land down there for Blacktails.

Thanks for the input guys, I was looking at the hunter permits and it looks like they would be $150 for the months of Oct/Nov. What are the $500 permits you're talking about? I'm coming from Bend and my main goal is to just get into an area I can find some blacktail to hunt. I know they are over by Eug/Springfield but it just seems like there might be a limit on public land. I haven't spent much time down south, but it's time to start scouting so maybe that's a good area to head to.

Thanks!

I wonder if the price is different from unit/area to others. I was looking at Wereyhser property in the N.Santiam area. they wanted $$$ for access and i coudlnt bring anyone with me like my kid or wife. Bogus

I don't think the new wayerhouser fee is worth it myself, for what you get out of it.

I haven't purchased one myself, but i do work for a contractor who works for weyerhaeuser. Every permit is different in the price and access you get. Some i think are a good value and some i think are a terrible value. I shot a mule last year though so i didn't have an archery tag left come blacktail season so i never had to think about buying one.

The fees are all over the map depending on the property and time. I havnt done it yet and have mixed feelings on something that was free a couple years ago but I do understand their position. My biggest worry is that all the timber companies will follow suit. If you hunt the coast range or the front range below around 3500 to 4000 ft it seems most of the land is in private timberland holdings. I hunt spring bear on the coast and hunt on a lot of timberland property that is not Weyerhaeuser.
My neighbor and friend took a very nice Rosie off of Weyerhaeuser during bow season 2 years ago. I cant remember what his permit cost but as I was looking at the mount the thought crossed my mind that I would have paid the fee for a chance at that particular Bull!
