Using iPhone 6s and the OnXMap data in Wyoming?

Just curious if using the iPhone 6 and OnXMaps data will work while hunting antelope unit 16 in Wyoming. Should I consider purchasing a handheld GPS or will the iPhone work just as well? Thanks!

I didn't use it in unit 16 but have used it in the NW corner of the state for elk & antelope hunting and I had it out more than my gps. I made sure to download the maps and it worked fine for me out of cell range.

Download the maps that you want before hand so you can work "offline" and it will work just fine. I used my phone more than my gps this past fall only because I was able to charge my phone frequently enough.

I was going to borrow a gps and buy the chip but I'm leaning towards getting the app. I've played with the free trial version I I think it will be much simpler to use. My only concern is battery life on my phone, but i think on airplane mode it should give me a days worth of use.

I use it on my phone. It does use the battery pretty quick. I keep phone turned off until I need it. Have a cheap garmin I use for general navigation. Like the phone app. It's pretty easy to use. Download maps of your area and you are good to go off line. Good luck. BB

I use the chip in my GPS in the truck and the application on my phone. I really like both of them.

The biggest issue is battery life. You can account for that using battery sticks and solar chargers. I have a goal zero solar charger that works pretty well. Can tie it to a back of a pack, charge while on the move.

I have an Android and carry a couple extra batteries when I'm backpacking (as well as keep it in airplane mode and not "overusing" it). I also have a backup 10,000 mAh battery than can run camp lites or charge my phone more than twice. It's my camera, GPS, video, and phone when service is available. I can sometimes text even when I barely get a signal. I now do not carry my GPS but keep one in the truck as an emergency backup.
