Units 75 or 76 for Mule Deer

Hi guys-
New guy to Wyoming. Been out west a bunch, never hunted Wyoming, hunt in WI for just about everything also. This year we decided to try Wyoming for Mule Deer, we drew 4 tags for unit D. We have our regular pack of 3 cousins and an uncle, uncle is getting up in age and is probably in the last few years of mountain hunting. Mule deer in Wyoming was his choice. So, being new to Wyoming, I am confused and excited.... but mostly confused. Colorado has lots of info available, I find it harder to decipher Wyoming's info. Here are my questions for any that can answer some... all... any...

We usually take a horse for Elk... we wont have our horse or horse trailer, so we are probably going to take a pop-up camper this year. In Colorado where we usually go, you have to be within certain places to camp. In the medicine bow area in units 75 or 76 I see camp sites, but I hear people talking about just camping along forest roads. Is this the case? We can just roll out camp where we find a place?

Road access. In the medicine bow area, are road passable in October? A standard truck will make it to a camp spot off the beaten path ok? With a trailer?

Terrain... as mentioned I have my uncle which is getting up in years, he can hike pretty well, but I dont need him climbing really steep terrain. Would one place be more suitable in these areas over another or are they most rolling hills?

The million dollar question... which can be PM'd to me if anyone is willing to share wisdom/knowledge.... is there any areas that he would have better luck getting that Wyoming buck checked off his list in? Places where there are a million guys or you have been that people are constantly buzzing around on 4 wheelers that you would recommend we avoid? We aren't 4 wheeler hunters, we like quiet, hiking, and not disturbing people. We would like to be around like minded folks if we have to be.

Anyway, forecasts look pretty good for the year, just need to find them. We will have a few days beforehand to scout a bit, but otherwise I am reading maps until my eyes bleed and trying to learn as much as I can from people who have been there and have some wisdom to share.

You can camp where ever you want in the Med Bow forest. Roads will be fine during the first of October. I'll pm you some ideas of where to look.

Terrain is fairly easy in a good portion of those areas. There are many gated off, old logging roads that may be a good choice for your uncle. These roads usually lead to older clear cuts that can be decent hunting. Deer numbers aren't great so I wouldn't hold out for trophies if you want to take a deer home. The road network is fairly extensive in these areas so it will be challenging to find areas where people aren't but a good portion of the local population drives around and road hunts. As far as popular camping spots, Lake Owen and Rob Roy offer plenty of nicer camping spots and the fishing isn't bad. You can however camp anywhere as ssliger mentions. Many of the creeks have brook trout and some have browns and rainbows so bring your fishing gear along. I would take ssliger's advice on areas to look as he will have more recent information than I do. Good luck to you.

I was in area 76 this weekend on a short get away with my wife and wow did we see alot of deer and some great bucks already. There going to be a lot of people up there just do to the easy access of trucks and campers it can be fairly moderate terrain to very tuff and steerp country. I talked to game and fish when they checked us for fishing license and the deer numbers are up but there is still a 3 point or better restriction on mule deer. Hope this helps ssliger knows this country fairly well you can ask him some questions as well. Good luck.

I hunted 75 last fall. I was there 7 days, and never did see a 3 point buck. Lots of does and spikes.. I wound up filling my tag on a young whitetail. I was focused primarily on elk though.

I do know another guy who got a nice 4x4 opening day, and I never did see another person off the roads. Beautiful area, moose were everywhere.
