I've hunted 67 a few years back during the muzzle loader season, for elk. I liked the area but didn't see many deer up high where the elk were. I have 13 deer points going into the draw this year and I'm thinking of drawing a 3rd season tag.

If any one has hunted 67 during the 3rd season in the last couple of years, I would like to talk to them. I've heard the deer are down low this time of year? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks adam

I killed a 184" deer in unit 67 in the 3rd season 2007. That was the year the gunisson valley had a terrible winter & killed a lot of the deer. I seen alot of good bucks & seen them mostly in the sage hills. I would difinitely would call a local game warden or the area BLM biologist to get the low down. Great unit w/ lots of public land to hunt. Good luck.

184 congrats! Sounds like you shot a buck of a life time.would love to see a picture if you have one on your computer? If I can find a mature buck in the 170's I would be more than happy.

When you were out there in 07 did you hunt near Gunnison in the lower area's, or did you hunt closer to the wilderness area on the south end of 67.

The points have sky-rocketed for this hunt and it took 14 points to guarantee a tag in 2013. I would expect at least a 1 point increase for 2014, even if they bump up the quota slightly like they did last year.

I killed a 180 in 3rd season 2012 with a nine point draw. I would love to hunt it again, I know I could do better but mine was close of first day. I had scouted 3 times and seen 5 deer that I would shoot. Reliable hunter gave me location of 200, I found my own 190 the evening before season opened. hunted him hard and later that day I saw his does too late for me. This is a very easy hunt that can be made hard. I hunted Aspens. Always some deer in sage.

last year it only took 13 points to guarantee a tag, and only 1 person didn't draw with 12. The first number on the cdow statistics page is 0 points. They gave out 9 tags to non residents last year.

You're right, I was not counting landowner tags . . . Maybe you will squeak in.

I actually hunted the eastern portion of the unit. There was much less people & and the BLM biologist had a set of sheds that was well over 200" typical frame.

I've hunted the Gunnison basin several times. The word I got in 2012 was that Unit 67 was coming back the best of the Gunnison basin units, not that 67 was fully back, but was the best on it's way to recovery.

The draw in for Unit 67 3rd season was as follows:

2010: 8.5% with 6 points
2011: 16.7% with 7 points
2012: 83.3% with 9 points
2013: 50% with 11 points

Point creep will be brutal in the next three years is my prediction, it's not good at all for guys chasing. I'm at eight and re-evaluating my options.

If the winter is good they will increase tag numbers again. Last year they increased them by 6, not enough to really off-set creep much.

How likely is the increase in tag numbers? Also when will some of the 4th season hunts come back?

I think point creep will get worse as deer recover because I think alot of guys with quite a few points have been sitting out of the draw and just getting points waiting for things to get better and will start entering the draw again once things start looking up.

I think your right about tags getting harder to draw in the near future. I've been hoping to draw unit 66 third season but it keeps going up by more than 1 point a year. I used to be 1 point behind now I'm 2 points away from drawing. From what I've heard so far it sounds like 67 hasn't completely re covered, but I think it's my best option if I want to hunt anytime soon.

I've been pretty much every year since 2007 except for this yr due to having a newborn learning new things. The guy I normally go with ended up shooting a 31" low 180s buck on the last day. That's one of those hunts where if you know where the deer tend to congregate before crossing units you can shoot a 180s if you lay off the trigger. Know of 2 over 200 that came off 3rd this past season.

That's what our crew has been doing. Everyone is sitting between 13-22pts. The high pt man is just waiting on a 4th to open and will hunt it 3rd off vouchers every yr until it happens.
