I hunted 66a a couple of times for elk with a bow, with pretty good success. It has been a few years since I have been back and was just wanting to see if anyone had been in there in the last couple of years. The last time I was there it had a lot of hunting pressure. I am thinking about coming back for 2014, but I might go to Wyoming. I have been building points there for several years, but I might build some more points before I go.Thanks for any info.

Thanks ivorytip. Both times I was in there we packed back in away from the roads, but there was still a lot of pressure. The last time I was there was in 08 and the sheep herders had destroyed about half of the feed in there. I am going to send you a PM. Thanks

66 is tex creekzone and 66a is dimond creekzone. dimond creek zone is made up of 66a and 76. tex creek zone is made up of 66 and 69. dont get caught in the wrong zone with the wrong tag. happens all to often, the 2 zones border eachother.

I have hunted my whole life and have only had my license checked twice. Once was duck hunting on the edge of town and the other was in this unit when I was packing out my elk,so I would say they watch it pretty close.

from what I understand is that, 66a used to be great mule deer hunting. And fish and game is trying to cut the elk numbers down in there. so lots of controlled hunts to cut the elk population back. I believe this is all part of idahos mule deer iniative.

It has been a few years since I have been there but I only seen a few mule deer in 2 years of hunting. I seen a lot of moose.

there are spots in that unit that were my go to spots for nice bucks, last 5 years, all my deer holes have been replaced with elk and small bucks and few does.

Hunted first time there this year. Waayyyy too many people, wouldn't go back unless they cut tag allotment in half. Great country, but overall quality of hunt I'd rate as below average. We bivied, we're in 1-6 miles, saw a couple good bulls and very close to putting a bull down, so you ask how can one complain that's elk hunting? I'm comparing to 7-8 other DIY public land trips done in 3 other states. Good area just need to cut back on tag allotment

AMEN. ive been sending fish and game emails for years, that zone has the potential to be an in and out tropghy unit, and 350+ class bulls get taken in there every year during archery and the controled rifle hunt, but the archery numbers need to come down. controled archery even.

I hunted there 2 years in a row about 5 years ago. We never heard any wolves or seen any tracks. Are there wolves in 66a now?
