I'm a non-resident thinking of applying for the type 2 tag in 2017 for Elk Unit 54. Does anyone have any experince in this area? Is this just the very northwest corner of the unit above the clark's fok/yellowstone river?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

It is a good area, but some rugged country that can be tough if you solo hunting without horses.

Thanks for the feedback. As a non-resident I can't access the wilderness area solo. Does that cut off most of the decent country?

My apologies, still sorting out the correct terminology for everything. The Shoshone National Forest takes up a chunk of that region. Am I correct to assume that is USFS land and I can hunt it as a non-resident?

That is correct. You can hunt any NF that is not Wilderness. If you look on the hunt planner on G&F website the Wilderness is shaded. Now you could hunt the wilderness if you find a resident that would take you in there.

It looks like NR Special draw took 5 points and regular draw took 6. Makes it a moot point for me. Most likely going general tag.
