I was curious if anyone has hunted 501. I?m hoping to put in for tags in that unit and wondering if people have had success

I haven't had the chance to hunt it because it can be hard to draw, but I've scouted (and just generally hiked) it a lot. I agree with DanPickar. There's definitely animals in there but they're more spread out and it can be a challenge. It's very popular with the locals and if you hike it (and get off trail) you'll find lots of ATV tracks out to private property, especially near the edges.

It's also really close to Denver so it gets a lot of weekend traffic. Plus you have the Colorado Trail running through it and a popular section-hike of that runs from near Wellington Lake West to route 285. There are major trailheads at both spots. It can be pretty busy there!

Then again, somebody's having SOME success. I found this guy in 501 on a hike there 2 years ago. I won't say where, but it was an open-pine covered ridge climbing up out of a valley with aspens and a creek. Just what you want: cover to escape through (or try to!) with a good trail down to water and food.

Did your hunt not go well then? Was curious how it ended up?
The muzzleloader season in the middle of archery changes their habits so thats the first hurdle. Elk are scattered and thin density and had to go a ways back to find elk. Called in two 5x5s and passed them. Had one chance at a 6 pt and didn't get a good shot. Been on plenty of OTC hunts that were better across the West.
