I haven't had the chance to hunt it because it can be hard to draw, but I've scouted (and just generally hiked) it a lot. I agree with DanPickar. There's definitely animals in there but they're more spread out and it can be a challenge. It's very popular with the locals and if you hike it (and get off trail) you'll find lots of ATV tracks out to private property, especially near the edges.
It's also really close to Denver so it gets a lot of weekend traffic. Plus you have the Colorado Trail running through it and a popular section-hike of that runs from near Wellington Lake West to route 285. There are major trailheads at both spots. It can be pretty busy there!
Then again, somebody's having SOME success. I found this guy in 501 on a hike there 2 years ago. I won't say where, but it was an open-pine covered ridge climbing up out of a valley with aspens and a creek. Just what you want: cover to escape through (or try to!) with a good trail down to water and food.
