My dad and I drew a rifle tag for unit 45 this year. My dad is 72 and has never shot a good bull. He really does not have many years left to hunt elk, in fact I think this may be his last, so i really would like to get him a good six point bull.

That said we will be hunting off of horse back and have no restrictions as far as the wilderness is concerned. We would likely camp near a road or 4X4 road and need to have water nearby for horses. We want to get away from people as much as possible. We are not restricted on our time to hunt and will take the entire season if need be.

I would like to start scouting and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just wanted to point out that nonresidents cannot hunt wilderness areas without a guide in Wyoming.

You will find bulls throughout the unit on NF. As far as the wilderness, a lot of it is rock with no cover up high. If you can scout a few days it would be time well spent on such a great tag.

Thanks guys. I am going to try to make at least 2 scouting trips before the season. I really want to try and narrow down the part of the unit that we are going to target.
There seems to be many 4x4 trails in the national forest so I am assuming after a few days the bulls will be pushed back onto the wilderness & harder to get to places that are more than a mile from a 4x4 trail.
