OK, so i drew for mature buck/bull elk and mule deer for unit 36. I just finished the elk hunt which was very successful. I was planning on hunting the same area for my mule deer (cook canyon and Mescalero reservation boundaries, however, i saw ZERO deer. My buddy said in areas where the elk are plentiful, which they were all over the place, there won't be that many deer. I've got two other buddies who drew the same mule tag and i'm hoping to plan a successful hunt for us. At least be in the area so we can see some deer. I need some help folks. Any info would be great and if anyone has a unit 36 elk tag, i'll tell you exactly where to go, we saw over 10 very large bulls in two days. Again, any help would be great.

thanks,

Josh

I archery deer hunted the unit last January and saw one decent buck in 8 days. Let me get my maps tonight at the house, I'll see if I can't give you some areas to try. What dates are the hunt?

I was doing some reading and some folks have said that the lower elevations near monjeau peak have some decent populations. I may call the biologists as well. Willing to listen to anything youve got.

most of the deer in this unit are in town. everyone feeds them. couple places to check out tho Devils Canyon, Hale Lake, and Nogal Canyon.

That's a fact, NMHUNTER is correct. 36 is not know for the greatest deer but you can find some. I have seen some monsters around the golf course in town. They need to have an archery town hunt and thin them out. Ft Stanton has some really good bucks but only youths are allowed to hunt there.
