unit 30 late season bull elk

Hey guys,

I got lucky in the 2nd draw and picked up a late season unit 30 bull tag in Idaho. I'm somewhat familiar with the area and will head over there a few times between now and Novemeber 1st. Has anybody drawn this hunt before or had any experience in this area? i have a few spots I want to check out but I'm more interested in what part of the 30 day season should be best. if anyone has any info on this hunt, I would appreciate anything you can give me. Thank you!

I solo hunted that area last season. Was a fun hunt even though everything was straight up and down. Probably saw over 600 elk over a seven day period. Only saw a couple of 300 class bulls and they were on private. Not an area to hunt if quality is a priority. The area is weather dependent with the majority of the elk coming over from Montana. At least that's what the warden and biologists told me. Ran into a number of hunters who had hunted all season holding out for the big one. I passed on some bigger 5pts than what I tagged on the last day of my hunt. Best way to scout a lot of the area is with a quality spotter from the highway. If you have a flexible schedule, I'd plan on hunting a day or two after the first major snowstorm. I was there the week before Thanksgiving. Up high there was too much snow to get around. Down low there was none. Most of the hunters I ran into were hunting between Salmon and Tendoy. I saw a ton of elk tracks on Grizzly Mtn but the one or two roads up there were already snowed in and the snow got too deep to walk. Never saw any hunters over there and would be an area I would spend more time on if I had the tag again...
