So a couple of guys and myself are heading out with mules to Montana! It's been a few years, but I shot my first elk out there just north of Yellowstone (like I say, it's been a few years), and I am extatic to go back. We are thinking about unit 280 this time around, which I beleive is the southern end of the Bob Marshall. Is that one of the units that you can hunt rifle starting September 15th? This doesn't necessarily appeal to me, but the other guys like it. I drew the combo tag, so I wouldn't mind seeing a mulie or two as well. Anybody have any recommendations on the area?

280 is a September 15th rifle unit. There are good elk and deer in that unit. The elk will be rutting but often quiet during the day. There is actually quite a bit of pressure in the unit from outfitters and DIYers, but it is also big and deep. Treat the trail system like roads. Get off them, and you could have a great hunt. Go DEEP and give the outfitter camps a few trail miles of room.

That is serious grizzly country. Keep that in mind.

Good luck!

Thanks, BB, you really seem to know your state well. I will be bringing bear spray/ side arm for sure. I normally do backpack hunts, so I will definitely be getting off the main drags once we get a base camp set up, but at least we can use the mules to ride in a lot of miles. How are the wolves?

Wolves are everywhere, get a tag for them too. The combination of wolf activity and hunting pressure are likely going to keep those bulls quieter than you might expect. My biggest advice is be flexible with your "base camp," and don't be afraid to move if you need to.
