My wife drew a 24B Coues deer hunt, the late December rifle hunt. Her best friend lives in Gold Canyon just east of Phoenix, and she likes to go down after Christmas to visit. Does anyone have any info on that unit they would be willing to share. I'd just like to see her get a nice representative buck. I have never hunted Coues before, but I am a glassing machine...lol.

Great draw! I've hunted it a couple of times, once for javs and the other for muleys. You got the Dec hunt which is prime for the rut. I've seen them just south of Roosevelt Lake a couple of miles east of the dam. In AZ, the Coues deer inhabit the higher portions of the range. Muleys will usually be in the lower portions. Lots of open areas to glass and that's how to find them. That late hunt has very high success, shouldn't be a problem finding a good one! good luck

MH: Thanks for the good info. I know NOTHING about Coues hunting, but since we often visit my wife's friend during the late Coues season, I thought, what the heck lets throw her name in the hat.

I have been reading on how to do this and this past week I picked up on another website that the Coues tend to be at the higher elevations (above 3500 feet). That was new to me and seems to be a critical piece. It is really good to hear you confirming that from your own experience. Thanks!

Also thanks for a good place to start looking.

I have hunted Javelina in 24B several times, i have seen some nice bucks up Campaign Creek which i believe is Forest Service road 449, i also have another spot in mind but i will have to look at my map to get you directions to it. I will look at it tonight and let you know, but i have always seen bucks in this area. A little farther north than Campaign Creek but i would definatley check it out. Will let you know.

That's good info Roboz...thanks. Have you ever been in the Montana Mountain, or Iron Mountain area. That looks interesting and would be easy for us to access from where we would be staying.
