Anyone have experience hunting this unit. My dad and I will be headed there the second week of season for a rifle hunt. Looks like a tough unit to get public access. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!

Second week will be tough. I wouldn't hold out for anything too big on public the second week. Get on the bigger blocks of public on the south end of the unit and burn some boot leather. We killed goats there last year but we had to get a couple miles off the main access roads by the second day. The goats were already pushed off public, we watched and waited for them to cross back over. Luckily they cooperated. You will have to get a GPS landowner chip to have a chance at a decent hunt.

Just came through the area on I-90 and hardly saw an antelope on either side, including 22. Dad talked with an outfitter in Buffalo and he said they had a die off. What I saw didn't look promising, but hopefully you can get away from the roads and be able to catch up to some goats. Good luck

Past couple years have been good (weather), wonder what he is referring to... Disease?

9th driest year on record in the past 122 years for northeast WY and western SD is what I read a few days ago. The WY hunting forecast even gives a vague warning of potential disease outbreaks because of drought in late summer and early fall. EHD and bluetongue are probably going to be a problem if drought conditions persist.

Anybody in northeast WY or western SD that can give us firsthand info on drought and/or disease?

If there was an outbreak I'm surprised they didn't mention it in the news section of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department website. They have monthly regional news letters and I don't recall anything about disease. Not so say it isn't true......... as asked above- anyone with firsthand experience / info ?

Well, I've been working the NE this week and I can't speak for all areas, but I've been working a lot on cross country routes so I've been back off the road a ways. All I've seen is healthy fat Antelope, and a good amount of them. I've talked to two different warden's this week and neither have said boo about disease.

That's what I wanted to hear go deep! That's where I'll be hunting in about 3 weeks. Thanks for the update. What are the range conditions like?

Areas look good, a few spoty dry areas, but nothing real ugly. Never seen any huge bucks, but a fair amount of good ones. Most of those units if you get a 70"+ you did good.

Just finished a cpl days in 16. Blue Tongue was in this unit Fall of 2015 and tags should have been severely cut. If there are 150 Antelope in this unit, I'll be surprised. Talked to 2 ranchers who both said the hills were littered with carcasses this spring. Lucky for us these were just some extra tags and not our primary unit.

We just tagged out in 5 days on muleys and antelope. If you're looking for game off the side of the road it's going to be a hard hunt. The WIA in 16 was hunted very hard, the blm off of 90 just west of powder river still has plenty of goats, you just have to work for them.

A cpl guys got muley and antelope bucks not far off the road. Unfortunate for them they parked on private then shot the bucks on said private. The landowner lives at the end of that county road and drives it every hour. Oops
The east side was pretty busy too with rigs at every well head. Met a father daughter over there, hope they did ok.

We had a couple leftover doe tags also, filled them all in one day.
