I got lucky and drew Unit 124 and am wondering if anyone is willing to share any information about the unit. I've hunted antelope in this part of the state but not elk. I would appreciate any helpful tips. Thanks in advance

CONGRATULATIONS
What a score. I'll have a lot more company in my unit.
Good luck, make it count!

I hear the opener is really good so lots of scouting before to have a big bull picked out opening morning. Most guys fill the first week, but I hear that bulls can come over from the Colorado side after their opener. Because of the low tag numbers, not much press on the unit. With all the hype you'd think they are killing some bruisers, but I searched the last 10 years in the Boone and Crockett database and I only saw 2 entries from Sweetwater County and that includes area 100 elk as well. For comparison, Park County had 16 entries during the past 10 years. Either way a mature bull is in your future...make sure to show us the pics.

Nice tag, you definitely defied the odds! The regular draw odds (max points) dropped from 7.7% last year to a mere 2.75% this year. The special draw dropped from 16% last year to 8% this year. Point creep has swallowed 124.

I probably should have introduced myself to begin with. I live in Central Oregon. Every year I apply in multiple states for chances of hunting new places. I enjoy DIY hunting. I will hunt archery, rifle or muzzleloader hunts. I've been fortunate in the past to hunt in Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Nevada and I hope to keep drawing tags. I've been lurking around the internet forums for years but have been reluctant to post much because of the bashing that goes on. This site seems like a good one with good people.

Welcome tugar and thanks got the intro! I only belong to this form but I know what your talking about on other forums I have visited at different times. This forum is very friendly and that type of thing is not tolerated. Hope you stick around and share some of your experience with us!

I'll be there with you. The odds were were very low this year. Did you pull the special or regular? We got the regular tags. Hope the unit gets lots of moisture this year. Tough to find much info out there due to the low tag numbers.

There is no difference in the regular or special other then the higher price usually gives the special better draw odds. Really it is the regular draw and special draw not regular tag and special tag. The tag is exactly the same no matter what draw you draw it in.
