Look up unit 61 on the ndow web site for numbers of tags in that unit before your hunt starts. Its bring your own rock to sit on as all the ones there have someone sitting on them starting mid September cow season.
I can't seem to find that information. Could you possibly provide a link? I would really appreciate it.

For numbers of tags i think you'll have to look at each hunt. Its a little better now the cow elk doesn't overlap deer season but it ends the day before in 61-71. When i hunted it last there were spike elk, cow, antelope and muzzy deer tags all going on at once. It was a zoo in 61-71.
I'll post some links tomorrow from a computer.

I hunted Unit 6 early rifle 5 years ago. It was a good hunt. I recommend you call the NV biologist for that area as he was very helpful. The bulk of the deer in the unit are in four mountain ranges, Bull Run, Mahogany, Independence, and one other. As has been mentioned, getting away from the roads, at least 1/2 mile, is key. You will need to use your glass (including spotting scope) to increase your odds of finding the bigger deer. I think pre-season scouting is critical in that unit too. Good luck!

Thank you. Good to know. I prefer the mountains anyway so that's good news.

Dont forget the 400 doe antelope tags just before too.
While there are a few deer out in the flats where the antelope live, the majority of the deer will be in the mountains mentioned above.
The antelope tags will have little if any effect on deer hunters.

I was thinking more about the number of people out and the amount of travel in the area, however the foothills will have both deer and antelope and hunters for both.

We used to hunt area 6,7 and 10 back when they used to give out 2000-2500 deer tags. It was no different back then, as soon as you get a mile or two away from the road you have eliminated probably 90% of the hunters out there.

Good to know. That's my plan. Although looking at Google earth it looks like there are atv trails everywhere which is concerning.

Okay, I'm pretty much set for my hunt I leave in two weeks. I did my scouting trip and I think I have my spots picked out. I just have one thing I can't figure out. I searched and searched but couldn't find anything. So I figured I would ask you guys for an answer or at least a source to find one. If a forest service road goes through a small piece of private land and isn't posted can you use the road to access the forest service land on the other side? I'm strictly talking about forest service roads that are designated as such on maps. Thank you for any help that can be provided. I don't want to trespass or break the law.

I believe in Nevada it has to be posted before there is any issue with use. Hopefully others will jump in here. Just remember that it doesn't have to have a sign on it just blaze orange paint on the tops of the posts. That was the hardest thing for me to get used to here was road going right through someone's ranch yard. I've got in the habit of trying to meet the rancher the night before or during the day before its not necessary but if someone was driving through my yard I'd like to know who. Also have gotten so good tips by showing them the respect by doing so.

Just wanted to check in after the hunt. I had a great time in some beautiful country. Unfortunately the bucks weren't showing and I came home empty handed but am very pleased with the experience.

Great looking country there. Those bucks can be quite elusive when they've already been chased a bit. Did you see much in the way of deer sign at all?
