Type 9 Wy. When to hunt

So I'm set on the LE unit I plan to draw in south central Wy this year. I generally like to hunt archery during the second half of the month, which I could theoretically do with the type 1 license, but with this unit the type 9 hunters would pretty be the only elk hunters in this unit or any neighboring general units until the 15th. My concern with the second half of the month is that the floodgates will open in the nearby neighboring general units, which aren't far away, and other hunts in this unit kick off as well.

I'm really just focused on archery and not likely to get back out for rifle, so I'm set on the type 9 but I'm torn on when the best time to hunt would be. Hunt the first half with very little competing pressure but possibly sketchy rutting action, or wait for the rut to get fired up in the second half but have to contend with pressured elk. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Assuming you are in a decent sized unit and they don't give out a pile of tags, I don't think I'd be too concerned about hunting pressure. I was bowhunting a unit in late September for 3 days this year and never saw another hunter.

I would go when you have the most time to go and make the most of it. And assuming you're burning a fair amount of points, I would definitely try and be able to go for at least 2 weeks. I know a few guys who only hunted a week this year in a good unit and they had a few unlucky breaks and both went home with their tags unfilled.

Might check the number of cow tags in the unit. A pretty decent LE unit I have had 2 tags in, one type 9 and one type 1, has a lot of cow tags and a huge increase in pressure the 15th of September. I always recommend getting it done asap. Put everything you have into filling it with a bow before the 15th. Just my observations and thoughts from the last 11 years with my having several type 5 and 6 cow tags mixed in with the 2 bull tags in the same unit.

The neighboring units will be open Sept. 1 for archery so the number of general archery hunters may help you push elk into your less pressured unit. Go early when the elk will be still bugling, once the season opens they hear so many people bugling they tend to shut up.The type 9 tag gives you an advantage so take it and hunt the first 2 weeks. You will see some deer hunters, general area, but enjoy the LQ season if you draw.
