It is never a good idea to compare what you spend on hunting with what a vacation with the wife or girlfriend is concerned. You will loose every time.

I remember in a camp once, some guys discussing one of those $18k reservation elk hunts...

another guy in the camp mentioned well you get go on 3 guided elk hunts at 6k and only get 1 elk or none, you just paid for that $18k elk hunt.

I figure , those who can afford it, and wish to do it , why deny themselves? kudos to them.
personally, I would not pay that much. but I would not ever pay for a guide either. for me ,on the subject of hunting, if I can't do it myself, it ain't worth doing.

THIS!!!!!!!
My wife is a beach gal. I don't compare time off and $ spent. DANGEROUS territory!!

However I know some non residents that hunt elk here in Colorado that have been successful every year for the last 10 years that I have known them. A lot of that 18% that you quote are also resident hunters that never leave their homes, they purchase a tag on a chance that they might go elk hunting. I know a few that do that every year.

So if you don't like the math or figure that it is more expensive to hunt elk than purchase camera gear, then by all means go buy some camera gear with that money.

A person needs to go on a guided hunt, at least once in their hunting carer.

I have been on two of them, one in British Colombia that required a guide and the other in Africa which is a whole different story.
On my hunt in BC it was great. By the time that I got up the coffee was done and breakfast was ready. Then by the time that I had ate breakfast the horses were saddled and ready to go. Then when I came back in that night the wranglers took care of the horses while I changed into some dry clothes and by the time I had changed dinner was ready.

Everyone needs to be pampered a few times in their life while hunting.
