Truck Rental in Denver for Antelope hunt

I will be flying into Denver, renting a truck, then driving up to Wyoming for an antelope hunt in late September. This will be my first time hunting out west, and was hoping you guys could provide some guidance regarding the truck rental in Denver.

First, is my best bet just to rent a truck from one of the major rental car companies at the airport?

Second, will I have a hard time finding a truck to rent that is 4x4? I figured that most trucks for rent in Denver would probably be 4x4 but I'm just guessing.

Finally, should I be fine with just a 4x4 truck in late September in Wyoming antelope country, or do I have to worry about snow and think about getting chains.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I used a rental a few years ago, while my jeep was in the shop. Rented it from Enterprise, it was a 4 door 4x4 Chevy with a hitch, pulled my camper and spent the weekend chasing speed goats. Worked just fine. Returned it covered from top to bottom in mud and dust. Enterprise didn't even ask me to clean it.

I have done that in the past with various national rental companies. They will all be 4x4 unless they came in via a one way rental from another state like CA. The negative is that they will have street tires, but I am not sure the tread matters in WY without chains. One word of advice is to book one at the best rate you can get and then keep checking everyday up until you leave. You can always cancel your reservation and re-book at a lower rate. You will be amazed how much rates will drop. I have usually been able to get rates in the $300 range doing that.

GG,

Yes airport, yes major, yes 4 x 4 ( many options) no on the chains. Only word of advice has been given, shop around rates change daily. Be aware of the snotty roads and medium tread tires ( they just don't self clean as well) post rain as it is like a mix of grease and oil until it dries back out.

I am planning on doing the same thing... flying to Denver and driving up to WY. I am thinking of buying chains for the truck once I arrive, maybe at Walmart. Unfortunately, I cant buy they chains until I know what size tires are going to be on my rental. Everyone is right about the roads out there when they get wet... they instantly turn to grease, and it doesnt take much water! I did a hunt in MT with a rental truck, no chains. I could barely manage 10mph on the road and I was fishtailing all over the place. A local with chains went flying by me with no problem at all.
Make your reservation early... I rented from Enterprise. And yes, you can check rates as they will vary, sometimes day to day. Just remember that hundreds of other hunters are heading out west to rent trucks too during the fall. If you cancel and re-book, you may lose out on a 4WD and get a 2WD instead.... or they could run out of trucks completely. I have friends who experienced this. You can also look at different rental companies like Rent A Wreck.
