Going on a backcountry backpack hunt in Idaho this October and I'm looking to pick up a different tripod. Right now I've got my scope mounted on a pretty lightweight vortex tripod but I don't think it's quite sturdy enough for that big of a scope. Any time I loosen up the nut to pan, the scope just flops around all over the place. Anyone run a tripod on a scope that size that they really like? Weight will be an consideration since we will be backpacking but I don't want to sacrifice too much stability and end up back in the same boat I'm in now.

Thanks!

I run the Manfrotto 190CXPRO3 carbon tripod with the 128 RC pan head. Not really in the backpacking weight category as the system goes 4lbs 10oz. The Vortex 20-60X85 is a heavy piece of gear coming in at just under 5lbs so you'll need a tripod and head suitable to handle the weight. You may consider shaving weight in other areas to have a good glassing platform.

The guy I hunt with used to have that scope, I have a Swaro 80mm. My Promaster 525 with the 6160 head worked fine with them. I also have an Outdoorsmans compact medium and use their heads now on both tripods. That is another really good choice. The Outdoorsmans pan head should be about as good as you get with the big spotters, at least best I've tried. The separate tilt/pan levers make adjusting for the weight easier.
