Hi Folks,

I am planning my very first Western hunt for Mule Deer this Fall. I will be hunting SE Idaho and I'm gearing up and making my lists, etc. I recently purchased a Redfield 20-60x80 Spotting Scope. I plan on packing it with me during our hunt (Day-trips; not overnight backcountry). It came with a small Tripod, but only extends to about 18 inches tall...so that got me thinking:

How useful is that small of a tripod going to be? Seems like any bush or tree in front of you will make it difficult to see over it.

Can anyone out there recommend a tripod that would be better suited? Im not sure how tall I need it to go...I would assume eye level in case I need to stand while spotting? Ive also read some come with a quick detach/attach shooting rest; any thoughts or experience with this?

Thanks!

There are a lot of great (and expensive options) models out there, but the $125ish legs by Vortex will serve you nicely. I've been using mine for 3 years and I use it to glass, film, pictures, etc.

Good luck this fall. Be sure to report back on the trip.

I've been saving for an Outdoorsmans tripod for a while now...hope to have one in my pack come November. Yes, expensive. I spent money on a less expensive tripod...it was junk, and went back to the store. Buy quality once...and keep it for life.

I agree Daubs. But I seem to have found a middle of the road option that works very well for me. However, I'd love to own an outdoorsman!

I use a Vortex tri pod, Pro GT for everyday use. But when packing in I switch to a cheapo very light weight one that is in that 18" range. I have had to move to a rock or lay on my side to get it good and steady and be able to see but it's worth the drop in weight. It works well for me.
