I'm think of getting a couple of trail cameras to set up for before the beginning of archery season. Are they worth getting and setting up on wallows and well used trails to pattern the elk?

I have one that I use like you're mentioning. I think that they can be a real asset, whether you catch bulls or not, figuring out patterns of animals when you can't be there in person. I'll start with mine the last week of July and check weekly, and move if needed along the way.

I picked up my first cam last year.
I got shots of things that i did not expect.
From a novice point of view you will see things that will inspire you and point you in directions that you might not have gone otherwise.
You will also see things that pass through once in three weeks, never to be seen again
At least not in daylight.
I would say that any pics you obtain are helpful.
Even if you get nothing….. that tells you something.

I use 2. One on wallows and the other I place on game trails. Elk seem hard to pattern though, especially closer to the rut. You will still get some coll pics. Make sure you use a lock box with a chain. Some people are scumbags and bears will destroy them.

game cameras are an addictive hobby!! i have nine i run all over the place. they definitely will tell you when and if any animals are coming though places. funny thing though i have never killed a deer or elk that i had gotten on camera always seem to go find one somewhere else or shoot one in the area i had never got pics of. But they let you know what is out there and is a lot of fun in the off season.

I use 4 cameras here for Whitetails the only bad thing is you will end up chasing a ghost if you are not careful!! Even with 4 cameras out most of the bigger bucks I kill never get their photo taken and I leave my cameras up pretty much year round. During the year I probably get in excess of 2000 pics.

Check out the Uway models. I have about 15 or so out in the elk woods and we put them out in the beginning of July. We have some great pictures. The more cameras you get the more pictures you get. They do get addictive. Waiting a couple weeks to get pictures is horrible torture?

More the better. I use 3. One on known wallows. One on "trails" and another in a random spot. I've found closer to the rut for elk an deer that I see more bucks/bulls in the random areas looking for females.
