I am thinking about buying a savage long range hunter in 6.5 - 284. I was wondering if anybody had any experience with the gun or the caliber.

Get the Kimber 84L
If I was you I'd get the Kimber 84L in .300 WSM- an awesome gun that will do the job for almost any type of game in North America.

The price gap between that Kimber 84L and that Savage is quite a gap indeed. Why shell out
better than twice the dough for a rifle that probably isn't much more accurate than the Savage,
just for some "eye-candy" and "one-up-manship" ? Function over form. The Savages have always
been an ugly spud...but they were always accurate, now even moreso with that "accutrigger".

I saved long and hard to buy a kimber montana. After several days and a couple hundred dollars in various ammo, i sent it back to the factory because i couldn't get a good group ( it was shooting 3.5" groups at 100yds). The kimber professionals shot a 1.5" group at 50yds. and returned it to me saying it was, "within specifications". I've never been so disgusted. still have the gun because i refuse to sell my problem to somebody else. there are several gun makers with accuracy guarantees for way less money... I know guys who have kimbers that drive tacks, but i'll never give another dollar to a company that doesn't stand behind their product.

I have the gun in 300 win mag, topped it with Zeiss conquest 4.5x14x44 with the Rapid Z 800 reticle. Getting a scope mount at Briley right now, I'll have a review whenever I get it back and have a chance to sling some lead. IMO unless you are going custom, its dollar for dollar one of the best buys out there.

Doe Nob, that's a sweet set up. I had the same scope on my Savage 300 Win., but recently put it on my 6.5-284 instead.

The savage would be a good choice. Take a look at their weather warrior series as well, great lightweight accurate guns. I have one in 300wsm and am really pleased with it. It shoots a lot of different ammo well. I USED to be a Rem 700 guy but they have failed to impress me lately and their stocks are junk.

I would say buy a browning x-bolt, I have 2 and they are my go to guns, very, very accurate and consistent.
