They still exist!

My daughter and I were fortunate to fill our deer tags yesterday morning, both on our property within about an hour of each other. Both are forked horns, but even a forked horn is well regarded around here. Of course it meant she was late to school, but her teacher is a hunter, so that worked out okay.

We had seen several deer, probably including both of these bucks, over the summer, but they had mostly disappeared for the last few weeks. Even the buck that was bedding under the lean-to roof where we have our firewood had stopped coming around. Now the weather has definitely changed, and I think they're starting to think about the rut. My daughter's deer was with a doe and two fawns, and mine came into the yard to check out his buddy lying next to the deck.
