I sure wish we could hunt elk here easier in my state. You all that can in your own state are so fortunate. Elk are such an awesome and majestic animal. I'm thinking on trying the Idaho OTC again. I heard bulls and saw them last October. I'll be in a lot better shape, God willing than last year and I'll gather if I pack in there again and hunker down and hunt smart I could get it done.

Some friends want to try WY but where we want to go I think we will need another point to draw.

You can hunt elk every year in my state but finding any is a different story! LOL
Here there's a love/hate relationship between landowners and elk. Ranchers that run cattle around the free ranging herds will shoot them 24/7/365 while others want them left alone for the herds to build.

I didnt know TX had any elk. I know alot of ranchers dont like them because they can be kinda hard on fences.

Far West Tx mountains and the panhandle has them. It's not uncommon for 340-380 bulls and even some over 400 to be shot. As long as they're classified as an exotic, can be shot year-round at any time of day and the an ill-conceived notion that everything here is shot over feed then you won't hear much about them.

So i could go to Texas and shoot an elk anyday of the year with no tag or license? Any public land in the parts that have elk? LOL

Have to have a license... If the landowners can prove depredation then they don't have to have one. There are a cpl public land WMAs that have them, but they're hunted through draw tags (same with Oryx).

Sadly, I could have put you on elk in 5 minutes, 700 miles away from where the free ranging ones reside. :D

I would too bc I'm not paying that much money here to shoot something classified as an exotic. Now the free cows the neighbors need killed are a different story, but that's more like slaughtering a pet....a very delicious pet.

A friend who used to hunt on our south Texas lease just shot an elk on his low fence 40 acres up in the hill country near Rock Springs a few weeks ago. The last time I turkey hunted down there on his place I saw six cow elk, but they were on the neighbor's property.
