We rode into our camp this weekend to cut our firewood for elk season and we saw about 200 elk and at least 8 bulls that were huge. Can't wait to get up there this year. We always see elk on our firewood trips but nothing like we saw this time. It should be a stellar year.

Same report here. I've been noticing this trend the past 2.5 years with all the forage/wet weather we have had the past years.
Cant wait. Less than 60 days till the archery opener!!!! Whoop whoop!!

There is a drawback to the wet spring we had though-the skeeters over here on the western slope are horrendous!!
If the current (wet) weather trend continues out there, do you expect skeeters to still be bad 2nd week of September? Was thinking on tarp camping to save weight in the pack but not if I have to donate a pint of blood each night.

Low elevations they could still be an issue... up high they are usually gone by then.

Dos,

Hard to say then. Depending on the weather you could still have them down that low. Bring a couple thermacells just in case. They work pretty well.

What's up high? The area I'm planning on hunting only has peaks in the 8500'ish range. I could see us sleeping at about 8,000 ft.
I would bet at that time of year at that elevation the skeeters will still be a problem for ya, so I'd be planning on adjusting your camping arrangement accordingly.

I'd plan for them. Like all have said, dependent of weather and that first cold snap or drop in temp could change it also. Depends also how much water is around your area you hunt. Aug 29th I'm at 10,700 and no issues. I can drop though 1000' and get near a wallow area and its unbearable.

Can't wait to get out and do some scouting. Waiting a little longer to get out there though. Hopefully I will find the same as you did!
