MallardX2 - What kind of wood is that? Do you season it before you build with it?
The log sitting on the mill is a red oak. The walls of the building are mostly poplar. I have (some) maple mixed in there as well.

To be honest, I lined the majority of the garage with green lumber. I'm paying the piper for that decision right now as I am having to go around and batten the entire thing. I guess I expected a 12" board to shrink. But I was not expecting it to lose 10% in width so now I have a million gaps to cover. I battened a portion of one wall last night as I need to get that corner completed in case, I run up on a deal on an air compressor as that is the corner the compressor will go in.

I will continue on the path of using green lumber until the garage is finished (because I need to get my reloading room done already...) but once that project is finished, I will NEVER use another green board (on anything important) that is not properly dried......It's just not worth it. For any important build, I'm going to stack and strap and dry any lumber before using it going forward.

The only logs I have left are oak logs and its surprising how wet they are after being cut 2 years ago. Oak is hard to cut and its hard on blades. Thankfully I have a blade sharpener and tooth setter.

I have the holes drilled and I need to set posts for a building to go over the mill. I will likely use green lumber for that.

Mallard; It's amazing how much green wood can shrink after it dries. I cut 20K bd, ft. of cedar, 10K of white spruce, 10K of white pine, 2K of yellow birch from my previous property. I skidded it all out with my 6x6 ATV, paid to have it sawed, then stickered it in my yard for at least a year before having it planed. The yellow birch was air dried for 3 years before I had it made into furniture for my new house, and it still did some splitting later. Spruce is beIMG_1880 (2).JPGst left to dry for a year in the log form befoe sawing, otherwise the lumber tends to twist as it dries. The old Finlander who sawed for me said , "It takes the meaness out of the wood.
Here's a pic of the garage that I built, entirely out of my own wood.

I have a bunch of boards that twisted on me after they dried.
Sweet gum twists like a cork screw. lol Its a hard board like hemlock when it dries though!

Those oak logs that I cut from the sawmill have sat too long and when you cut them you can already see the board warping 2" from end to end before you even get though the end of the log.... very frustrating. Which is why I prefer cutting green wood.

Trying to get though all of this oak from several years ago. It's been stacked up but the outer 1.5" of it is starting to get "Punky". So, I am losing quite a bit of it. I wore my tracking belts out last weekend. So, I am waiting on those to get here so I can finish up cutting that stack of wood.
The next wood I cut will be cut when it is green, so I don't have the bug/punk issue. Didn't get the sawmill until mid-summer last year. Should have gotten it a year before that so I could have gotten to this pile of logs sooner. Doing all the work myself doesn't exactly help matters any. It takes a long time when you are loading/unloading/sawing everything personally.

On another note: I did get my garage pretty much finished and ready for the ceiling to be put in.

The rooster flogged my wife for the very last time.....

Finally, after 30 years of wanting one, I got me a big air compressor. Hooked power up to it to make sure it ran last night and I am hooking up the filters and dryers tonight.
