How many of you use a tarp of any kind for backpack hunting? For an emergency shelter?

Personally I have used one a few times, in fact when I started backhunting on my own I used a cheap blue tarp from Wal-Mart. I have since used quite a few other makes and models.

I carry one but normally use it at camp as a lean to to cook under. I carry two space blankets most of the time they are light and work great in a pinch if I decide to stay away from camp for the night. I think most people underestimate the space blankets.

I sure carry one, even when just backpacking. Remember how Rambo made a dang suit our of an old tarp in the first movie (lol)? A small tarp can also make field dressing easier, especially if you're alone. It gives you something to drag the animal with, tilt it if needed, etc..etc... plus it helps keep all the ground debris from getting on the meat.

I also carry a couple of them with me. There's been a few times when it made an unplanned overnight stay on a mountain a lot more comfortable.

I carry a 8x10 siltarp while backpack hunting. Use it for an awning for cooking space in front of my tent, carry it in my pack while away from camp in case I need emergency shelter, and best of all it is big enough for a one man sauna for getting clean when there's lots of snow around.

I carry a Stasha with me, only had to use it once. I was stupid (just this one time) and ignored the weather reports. Got slammed by a front while hunting on the coast...ended up wrapping up in it and waited it out for a couple hours.

At a base camp, extra tarps are just as important for keeping the rain off as keeping the sun off.

oh gotcha. Thanks. I thought I heard about a float trip coming up that you were doing. That is pretty darn fast it seems like 84 miles in a week. I like that class 4 - 5 weather, well I wouldn't like to be in it, especially on a river.

I have adopted a Six Moons Gatewood Cape and a Raven Omni bivy. I got this as a spike out setup, and I am slowly making the transition to floorless. I will always have my copper spur if I wimp out on the tarp.
